Verse Acts 28:23. _TO WHOM HE EXPOUNDED - THE KINGDOM OF GOD_] To whom he showed that the reign of the Messiah was to be a spiritual reign; and that _Jesus_, whom the Jewish rulers had lately crucified, was the _true Messiah_, who should rule in this spiritual kingdom. These two points were probably those on which he expatiated from morning to evening, proving both _out of the law_ and _out of the prophets_. How easily Jesus, as the Messiah, and his spiritual kingdom, might be proved from the _law of Moses_, any person may be satisfied, by consulting the notes written on those books. As to the _prophets_, their predictions are so clear, and their prophecies so obviously fulfilled in the person, preaching, miracles, passion, and death of Jesus Christ, that it is utterly impossible, with any show of reason, to apply them to any other....

Melita, which means “honey,” is the island of Malta. It was even then a prominent place for navigation where many vessels wintered. Luke calls the inhabitants Barbarians, a term used by the Greeks for all peoples who did not use their language. THE JEWS ARE HARDENED. It was a numerous meeting; we can scarcely understand the words to mean that more came the second time than the first. The kingdom of God is a wide phrase for the Christian doctrine which began with the announcement of the nearness of God's rule (_cf. Acts 1:3_). The doctrine about Jesus, supported by texts from the Law and the Prophets, is appropriate to the audience, and sums up what the writer considered to be the essence of Christian preaching (_cf._ Luke 24:44). But they must have heard it all before; the occasion could not have such tragic importance for them as Paul's quotation of Isaiah 6:9 f. (LXX) suggests.
