AND FROM THENCE WE FETCHED A COMPASS, AND CAME TO RHEGIUM: AND AFTER ONE DAY THE SOUTH WIND BLEW, AND WE CAME THE NEXT DAY TO PUTEOLI: And from thence we fetched a compass, [perielthontes (G4014)] - literally, 'went around;' that is, proceeded circuitously, or (in nautical phrase) tacked, working probably to windward (as Mr. Smith thinks), and availing themselves of the sinuosities of the coast, the wind not being favourable. What follows confirms this. And came to Rhegium - now Reggio, a seaport on the southwest point of the Italian coast, opposite the northeast point of Sicily, and at the entrance of the narrow straits of Messina. AND AFTER ONE DAY THE SOUTH WIND BLEW _ - `a south wind sprang up;' and so they were now favoured with a fair wind, the want of which probably kept them three days at Syracuse, and then obliged them to tack, and put in for a day at Rhegium. _...

11-16 The common events of travelling are seldom worthy of being told; but the comfort of communion with the saints, and kindness shown by friends, deserve particular mention. The Christians at Rome were so far from being ashamed of Paul, or afraid of owning him, because he was a prisoner, that they were the more careful to show him respect. He had great comfort in this. Verse Acts 28:13. _WE FETCHED A COMPASS_] οθεν περιελθοντες, _Whence we_ _coasted about_. This will appear evident, when the coast of Sicily is viewed on any correct map, of a tolerably large scale. _RHEGIUM_] A city and promontory in Calabria, in Italy, opposite to Sicily. It is now called _Reggio_. It had its name, ρηγιον, _Rhegium_, from the Greek ρηγνυμι, _to break off_; because it appears to have been _broken off_ from Sicily. _THE SOUTH WIND BLEW_] This was the fairest wind they could have from Syracuse, to reach the straits of Rhegium. _THE NEXT DAY TO PUTEOLI_] This place, now commonly called _Pozzuoli_, is an ancient town of Naples in the _Terra di Lavoro_; and is supposed to have been founded by the _Samians_, about 470 years before Christ. AND CAME TO RHEGIUM - This was a city of Italy, in the kingdom of Naples, on the coast near the southwest extremity of Italy. It was nearly opposite to Messina, in Sicily. It is now called “Reggio.” THE SOUTH WIND - A wind favorable for their voyage. TO PUTEOLI - The wells. This place was celebrated for its warm baths, and from these and its springs it is supposed to have derived its name of The Wells. It is now called “Pozzuoli,” and is in the campania of Naples, on the north side of the bay, and about 8 miles northwest from Naples. CHAPTER 28 _ 1. In the Island of Melita (Acts 28:1)._ 2. The arrival in Rome (Acts 28:11). 3. Paul calling the chief of the Jews and his message (Acts 28:17). Melita, which means “honey,” is the island of Malta. It was even then a prominent place for navigation where many vessels wintered. Luke calls the inhabitants Barbarians, a term used by the Greeks for all peoples who did not use their language. The wrecked company was not plundered by the people of the island, but instead received much kindness and were made comfortable in the cold rain which fell. JOURNEY FROM MALTA TO ROME.Three months brings us to the middle of February, which is before the opening of navigation. They had doubtless seen the _Dioscuri,_ Heavenly Twins, a ship like that in which they were wrecked, and making the same voyage from Alexandria to Italy. A day's sail would bring them to Syracuse. From Syracuse to Rhegium they had not a S. wind, and if the text is correct they had to tack. The _mg.,_ they east loose, adopted by WH, is too trivial a statement. After a day at Rhegium (now Reggio), the wind sprang up which they wanted, and they sailed in a day to Puteoli, where the passengers landed. The journey is not like that of a prisoner on his way to trial, as Preuschen remarks, but like that of a missionary whose time is at his own disposal. The centurion has disappeared out of the story, and only comes forward again in Acts 28:16 (_mg.)._ Paul is twice
