33-45 Joseph gave good advice to Pharaoh. Fair warning should always be followed by good counsel. God has in his word told us of a day of trial before us, when we shall need all the grace we can have. Now, therefore, provide accordingly. Pharaoh gave Joseph an honourable testimony. He is a man in whom the spirit of God is; and such men ought to be valued. Pharaoh puts upon Joseph marks of honour. He gave him such a name as spoke the value he had for him, Zaphnath-paaneah, "a revealer of secrets." This preferment of Joseph encourages all to trust in God. Some translate Joseph's new name, "the saviour of the world." The brightest glories, even of the upper world, are put upon Christ, the highest trust lodged in his hand, and all power given him, both in heaven and earth....

GENESIS 41. JOSEPH INTERPRETS PHARAOH'S DREAMS AND IS MADE VICEROY OF EGYPT. This is mainly from E, Genesis 41:1 apart from Genesis 41:15_ b_, and perhaps Genesis 41:9_ b_ entirely so. FORASMUCH AS GOD HATH SHOWED THEE ALL THIS. Pharaoh's conclusion is rational. If God has shown all this to Joseph, the spirit of God must be in him and he will therefore be "discreet and wise." His words show how greatly the Egyptians esteemed the higher knowledge, since it confirms the opinion that made this nation so renowned among the ancients. The "wisdom of Egypt" was everywhere celebrated. Moses was said to have been educated "in all the wisdom of the Egyptians....

Joseph as Grand Vizier 38. _such a one as this_ Pharaoh and his servants are represented as discerning in Joseph the supreme gifts of one who combined the supernatural power of interpreting dreams with the practical wisdom and sagacity of a statesman. _in whom the spirit of God is_ The same phrase is employed by Belshazzar when he addresses Daniel: Daniel 5:14, "I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee."
