Which signifies forgetfulness, as the reason of it shows: FOR GOD, [SAID HE], HATH MADE ME FORGET ALL MY TOIL, AND ALL MY FATHER'S HOUSE; all his toil and labour in Potiphar's house, and especially in the prison; and all the injuries his brethren had done him; all this he was made to forget by the grandeur and honour, wealth and riches, power and authority he was possessed of; and indeed he had so much business upon his hands, that he had scarce time to think of his father, and his family....

GENESIS 41. JOSEPH INTERPRETS PHARAOH'S DREAMS AND IS MADE VICEROY OF EGYPT. This is mainly from E, Genesis 41:1 apart from Genesis 41:15_ b_, and perhaps Genesis 41:9_ b_ entirely so. MANASSEH: FOR GOD, &C.— He gives the reason for calling his son _Manasseh,_ or _forgetting; because God,_ says he, _hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house;_ that is, _all my toil_ in _my father's house:_ GOD hath defaced the remembrance of all the hardships I suffered from my brethren: "God did for certain purposes order it so," says Dr. Wall, "or else it might be counted a wonder, that in all this time he did not send to his father." REFLECTIONS.—Joseph's diligence is as great as his wisdom. He is no sooner in office, than he executes the trust reposed in him. The more a statesman is distinguished, the more laborious should he be for the public good. God blesses him abundantly in his labour, and adds to the fruitfulness of the land, the fruitfulness of his house. THE DREAMS OF PHARAOH AND THE ADVANCEMENT OF JOSEPH 1. Pharaoh] It is believed that a dynasty of Asiatic (perhaps Bedouin) conquerors, known as the Hyksôs or Shepherd kings, were now in power in Egypt. Their rule lasted for 500 years, until 1700 or 1600 b.c., when a native Nubian dynasty from Thebes expelled the invaders. The court was at Zoan on the eastern frontier of Egypt.
