_AND JOSEPH WAS THIRTY YEARS OLD WHEN HE STOOD BEFORE PHARAOH KING OF EGYPT. AND JOSEPH WENT OUT FROM THE PRESENCE OF PHARAOH, AND WENT THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND OF EGYPT._ Thirty years - seventeen when brought into Egypt, probably three in prison, and thirteen in the service of Potiphar. WENT OUT ... THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND OF EGYPT - made an immediate survey, to determine the site and size of the storehouses required for the different quarters of the country, as well as to provide channels for the irrigation of the whole land, and by a proper distribution of the water supply, to use all the appliances of human effort and machinery for taking advantage of the Providence-sent inundation....

46._And Joseph was thirty years old_. For two reasons Moses records the age at which Joseph was advanced to the government of the kingdom. First, because it is seldom that old men give themselves up to be governed by the young: whence it may be inferred that it was by the singular providence of God that Joseph governed without being envied, and that reverence and majesty were given him beyond his years. For if there was danger lest Timothy’s youth should render him contemptible, Joseph would have been equally exposed to contempt, unless authority had been divinely procured for him. And although he could not have obtained this authority by his own industry, yet it is probable that the extraordinary virtues with which God had endowed him, availed not a little to increase and confirm it. A second reason for noting his age is, that the reader may reflect on the long duration of the suffering...

46-57 In the names of his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, Joseph owned the Divine providence. 1. He was made to forget his misery. 2. He was made fruitful in the land of his affliction. The seven plenteous years came, and were ended. We ought to look forward to the end of the days, both of our prosperity and of our opportunity. We must not be secure in prosperity, nor slothful in making good use of opportunity. Years of plenty will end; what thy hand finds to do, do it; and gather in gathering time. The dearth came, and the famine was not only in Egypt, but in other lands. Joseph was diligent in laying up, while the plenty lasted. He was prudent and careful in giving out, when the famine came. Verse Genesis 41:46. _JOSEPH_ WAS _THIRTY YEARS OLD_] As he was _seventeen_ years old when he was sold into Egypt, Genesis 37:2, and was now _thirty_, he must have been _thirteen_ years in slavery. _STOOD BEFORE PHARAOH_] This phrase always means admission to the immediate presence of the sovereign, and having the honour of his most unlimited confidence. Among the Asiatic princes, the privilege of _coming even to their seat_, of _standing before them,_ _ c._, was granted only to the highest _favourites_....
