Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand. 2._Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one. _This may refer to the Assyrians, as if he had said, that they will be ready at God’s command to fight under his authority, as soon as they shall be called. Yet I prefer to take it without a substantive, to mean either “a staff,” or some other instrument, by which the Lord will cast them down from this lofty pride. _As a deluge of hail. _He compares it to “a deluge” or to “hail,” by which both herbs and flowers are thrown down, and all the beauty of the earth is marred. Thus he continues the metaphor of the “fading flower,” which he had introduced at the beginning of the chapter; for nothing can be more destructive to flowers than a heavy shower or “hail.” He makes use of the demonstrative particle הנה, (_hinnēh_,) _behold_; because wicked men are not moved by any threatenings, and therefore he shews that he does not speak of what is doub...

1-4 What men are proud of, be it ever so mean, is to them as a crown; but pride is the forerunner of destruction. How foolishly drunkards act! Those who are overcome with wine are overcome by Satan; and there is not greater drudgery in the world than hard drinking. Their health is ruined; men are broken in their callings and estates, and their families are ruined by it. Their souls are in danger of being undone for ever, and all merely to gratify a base lust. In God's professing people, like Israel, it is worse than in any other. And he is just in taking away the plenty they thus abuse. The plenty they were proud of, is but a fading flower. BEHOLD, THE LORD HATH A MIGHTY AND STRONG ONE - The Hebrew of this passage is, ‘Lo! there is to the Lord (לאדני _la'donāy_) mighty and strong.’ Lowth renders it, ‘Behold the mighty one, the exceedingly strong one,’ And supposes that it means the Lord himself. It is evident, however, that something must be understood as being that which the Lord ‘hath,’ for the Hebrew properly implies that there is something strong and mighty which is under his control, and with which, as with a tempest, he will sweep away and destroy Ephraim. ISAIAH 28. In Isaiah 28:1 Isaiah predicts the speedy overthrow of Samaria. The date is therefore not later than the year in which Samaria fell (Isaiah 7:22). Apparently it was uttered before the siege began, as is suggested by the reference to the drunken revelling of the inhabitants. It may possibly be fixed after Hoshea had concluded his alliance with Egypt and revolted from Assyria and before Shalmaneser had actually taken steps to punish his defection (pp. 59, 70). Isaiah 28:5 f. seems to be a later addition. The rest of the chapter belongs in the main to c. 703. Probably Isaiah 28:7 and...
