Isaiah 28:22

Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. BE YE NOT MOCKERS - a sin which they had committed (Isaiah 28:9). LEST YOUR BANDS BE MADE STRONG - their Assyrian bondage (). Judah was then tributary to Assyria. Or, 'lest your punishment be made still more severe.' A CONSUMPTION - destruction (Isaiah 10:22; )....

22._Now therefore. _He again reminds those wicked men, whom he had formerly called “scorners,” (Isaiah 28:14,) that their cunning, and contempt, and jeers, and mockery, will avail them nothing, because all their ingenuity will be thwarted; and he exhorts them to repentance, if there still be any of them that are capable of being cured. For this reason he repeats the same threatenings, in order to arouse them. _Lest your chains be more firmly fastened. _He says that all that they will gain by resistance will be to draw themselves more firmly into their nets. Instead of “chains,” there are some who render מוסרים (_mōsĕrīm_) “chastisements;” but this does not agree with the context. The metaphor of “chains” is highly appropriate in this passage; for, as the fox which has fallen into a snare, fastens the knot more firmly by his attempts

16-22 Here is a promise of Christ, as the only foundation of hope for escaping the wrath to come. This foundation was laid in Zion, in the eternal counsels of God. This foundation is a stone, firm and able to support his church. It is a tried stone, a chosen stone, approved of God, and never failed any who made trial of it. A corner stone, binding together the whole building, and bearing the whole weight; precious in the sight of the Lord, and of every believer; a sure foundation on which to build. And he who in any age or nation shall believe this testimony, and rest all his hopes, and his never-dying soul on this foundation, shall never be confounded. Verse Isaiah 28:22. _THE LORD GOD_] אדני יהוה _Adonai Jehovah_. Adonai is omitted by four of _Kennicott's_ MSS., and in the _Septuagint,_ _Syriac_, and _Arabic_....

NOW THEREFORE - In view of the certain judgment which God will bring upon you. BE YE NOT MOCKERS - This was the prevailing sin Isaiah 28:9, and on account of this sin in part the judgment of God was about to come upon the guilty nation. LEST YOUR BANDS BE MADE STRONG - Lest your confinement should be more severe and protracted. God would punish them according to their sins, and if they now ceased to mock and deride him it would greatly mitigate the severity of their punishment (compare Isaiah 24:22). NOW THEREFORE BE YE NOT MOCKERS,.... At the words of the prophets, and the judgments denounced by them, which is very common, when they are deferred, and not immediately executed: this was the case before the destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, and one cause of it, 2 Chronicles 36:16 and also by the Romans; see Acts 13:41: LEST YOUR BANDS BE MADE STRONG; punishment become heavier, and more grievous; and so the Syriac version renders it; as prisoners that attempt to make their escape have their bonds and fetters made faster, and so are put to more pain and distress; to which the allusion seems to be, signifying, that by scoffing and mocking at the word of God they would bring upon themselves greater and sorer punishments,...

JERUSALEM ALSO IS THREATENED WITH DESTRUCTION. But Jerusalem like Ephraim reels with intoxication, the priests and prophets especially. The prophet is not steady in his vision, the priest when pronouncing judgment has his faculties clouded by wine. Their revels are carried to disgusting excees. The scorners mock Isaiah: Is he talking to children that he goes over his lesson again and again with such wearisome monotony? Well, if the prophet's message will not satisfy them, Yahweh will speak to them in the foreign language of Assyria. They had refused to listen when He told them of the true rest, and so now He will speak to them with a wearisome monotony indeed, in strange-sounding words which they will not be able to treat with supercilious scorn, for they will be involved in utter ruin.
