The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet: THE CROWN OF PRIDE, THE DRUNKARDS - i:e., 'the proud crown of the drunkards.'...

1-4 What men are proud of, be it ever so mean, is to them as a crown; but pride is the forerunner of destruction. How foolishly drunkards act! Those who are overcome with wine are overcome by Satan; and there is not greater drudgery in the world than hard drinking. Their health is ruined; men are broken in their callings and estates, and their families are ruined by it. Their souls are in danger of being undone for ever, and all merely to gratify a base lust. In God's professing people, like Israel, it is worse than in any other. And he is just in taking away the plenty they thus abuse. The plenty they were proud of, is but a fading flower. Like the early fruit, which, as soon as discovered, is plucked and eaten....

ISAIAH 28. In Isaiah 28:1 Isaiah predicts the speedy overthrow of Samaria. The date is therefore not later than the year in which Samaria fell (Isaiah 7:22). Apparently it was uttered before the siege began, as is suggested by the reference to the drunken revelling of the inhabitants. It may possibly be fixed after Hoshea had concluded his alliance with Egypt and revolted from Assyria and before Shalmaneser had actually taken steps to punish his defection (pp. 59, 70). BEHOLD, THE LORD, &C.— The punishment upon Ephraim is contained in these verses, and consists of three gradations; the _first_ in the second verse; the meaning whereof literally is, that God has ready at his command a potent prince, whom he will send against a hypocritical people, its kings, leaders, elders, and teachers, that like a horrid winter-storm he may overflow, overwhelm, and utterly destroy them.
