5-14 Elihu here shows that God acts as righteous Governor. He is always ready to defend those that are injured. If our eye is ever toward God in duty, his eye will be ever upon us in mercy, and, when we are at the lowest, will not overlook us. God intends, when he afflicts us, to discover past sins to us, and to bring them to our remembrance. Also, to dispose our hearts to be taught: affliction makes people willing to learn, through the grace of God working with and by it. And further, to deter us from sinning for the future. Verse Job 36:12. _BUT IF THEY OBEY NOT_] This also is a _general rule_, from which, in the course of Providence, there are only few, and those only _apparent_, deviations. Instead of _they shall perish by_ _the sword_, the meaning of the Hebrew בשלח יעברו _beshelach yaaboru,_ is, "By a dart they shall pass by." They shall be in _continual_ _dangers_, and often _fall_ before they have lived out half their days. Mr. _Good_ translates: _They pass by as an arrow_. The VULGATE: _Transibunt per gladium_. BUT IF THEY OBEY NOT - If those who are afflicted do not turn to God, and yield him obedience, they must expect that he will continue their calamities until they are cut off. THEY SHALL PERISH BY THE SWORD - Margin, as in Hebrew “pass away.” The word rendered “sword” (שׁלח _shelach_) means properly “anything sent” - as a spear or an arrow - “a missile” - and then an instrument of war in general. It may be applied to any weapon that is used to produce death. The idea here is, that the man who was afflicted on account of the sins which he had committed, and who did not repent of them and turn to God, would be cut off. God would not withdraw his hand unless he acknowledged his offences. Elihu had told Job in the last verse of the preceding chapter that he had opened his mouth in vanity and had multiplied words without knowledge. That should have explained to Job the reason why God did not answer. There could be no reply from Job and so Elihu continues. He is not through yet with speaking in behalf of God. Sublimely he stands up for God. “I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.” He tells Job, “One that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.” How could he say this? Becau

God is mighty, yet despises none. He destroys the wicked, but watches over the righteous, exalting them to honour. If He afflicts them it is to bring home to them their sin. Thus God instructs them and teaches them repentance. If they repent they prosper, but, if not, destruction is their portion. In Job 36:5 b read He is mighty in strength and understanding (Ley). Elihu's doctrine is in a word: God is great and despiseth not, He is great in strength of heart. His greatness is that of understanding, which enables Him to estimate all rightly, to see through all right and wrong, and to adapt His providence to the strong and to the weak, the evil and the good. This thought with the illustrations of it, Job 36:6, and the application of it to Job, vv16-25, exhaust the first half of this concluding speech....
