24-33 Elihu endeavours to fill Job with high thought of God, and so to persuade him into cheerful submission to his providence. Man may see God's works, and is capable of discerning his hand in them, which the beasts are not, therefore they ought to give him the glory. But while the worker of iniquity ought to tremble, the true believer should rejoice. Children should hear with pleasure their Father's voice, even when he speaks in terror to his enemies. There is no light but there may be a cloud to intercept it. The light of the favour of God, the light of his countenance, the most blessed light of all, even that light has many a cloud. The clouds of our sins cause the Lord to his face, and hinder the light of his loving-kindness from shining on our souls....

Verse Job 36:32. _WITH CLOUDS HE COVERETH THE LIGHT._] This is all extraordinary saying, על כפים כמה אור _al cappayim kissah or_, which Mr. _Good_ translates, "He brandisheth the blaze athwart the concave." The _Vulgate_, with which all the other _versions_ less or more agree, has, _In manibus abscondit lucem_, "In his hands he hideth the light;" or, more literally, "By the hollow of his hands (כפים _cappayim_) he concealeth the light, (אור _or_,") the _fountain of light_, i.e., the SUN. _AND COMMANDETH IT_ NOT TO SHINE _BY_ THE CLOUD _THAT COMETH_ _BETWIXT._] I am afraid this is no translation of the original. WITH CLOUDS HE COVERETH THE LIGHT - The Hebrew here is, על־כפים _‛__al_-_kaphiym_ - “upon his hands.” Jerome, “In manibus abscondit lucem,” “he hideth the light in his hands.” Septuagint, Ἐπὶ χειρῶν ἐκάλυψε φῶς _Epi_ _cheirōn_ _ekalupse_ _fōs_ - “he covereth the light in his hands.” The allusion is, undoubtedly, to the lightning, and the image is, that God takes the lightning in his hands, and directs it as he pleases. There has been great variety however, in the exposition of this verse and the following. Schultens enumerates no less than “twenty-eight” different interpretations, and almost every commentator has had his own view of the passage. It is quite evident that our translators did not understand it, and were not able to make out of it any tolerable sense. What idea they attached to the two verses...

EXPOSITION JOB 36:1 The two chapters, Job 36:1; Job 37:1, form a single discourse, and ought not to have been separated; or, at any rate, not so unskilfully as they are, in the middle of a description of a thunderstorm.
