John 13:17

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. IF YE KNOW THESE THINGS, HAPPY ARE YE IF YE DO THEM. A hint that even among real Christians the doing of such things would come lamentably short of the knowing....

17._If you know these things. _He declares that they _are happy_, _if they _know _and _do _these things_; for _knowledge _is not entitled to be called true, unless it produce such an effect on believers as to lead them to conform themselves to their Head. On the contrary, it is a vain imagination, when we look upon Christ, and the things which belong to Christ, as separate from ourselves. We may infer from this that, until a man has learned to yield to his brethren, he does not _know _if Christ be _the Master_. Since there is no man who performs his duty to his brethren hi all respects, and since there are many who are careless and sluggish in brotherly offices, this shows us that we are still at a great distance from the full light of faith....

1-17 Our Lord Jesus has a people in the world that are his own; he has purchased them, and paid dear for them, and he has set them apart for himself; they devote themselves to him as a peculiar people. Those whom Christ loves, he loves to the end. Nothing can separate a true believer from the love of Christ. We know not when our hour will come, therefore what we have to do in constant preparation for it, ought never to be undone. What way of access the devil has to men's hearts we cannot tell. But some sins are so exceedingly sinful, and there is so little temptation to them from the world and the flesh, that it is plain they are directly from Satan. Jesus washed his disciples' feet, that he might teach us to think nothing below us, wherein we may promote God's glory, and the good of our brethren. We must address ourselves to duty, and must lay aside every thing that would hinder us in...

Verse John 13:17. _IF YE KNOW THESE THINGS, HAPPY_, c.] True _happiness_ consists in the _knowledge_ of God, and in _obedience_ to him. A man is not happy because he _knows_ much but because he receives much of the Divine nature, and is, in all his conduct, conformed to the Divine will. "They who have _read_ many books (says _Menu_) are more exalted than such as have _seldom_ studied; they who _retain_ what they have read, than _forgetful_ readers; they who _fully understand_, than such as only _remember_; and they who _perform_ their _known_ _duty_, than such as barely _know_ it. _Sacred knowledge_ and _devotedness_ to God are the means by which a man can arrive at _beatitude_." THE MEANING OF THE ACT: THE ONE EXCEPTION. The disciples recognise in Him their teacher and master. They should, therefore, follow His example by helping each other even in the lowliest services. The Master had set an example which the slave need not be ashamed to copy. If they realise that by doing such things He has made it their duty to do the same, then they will be happy in the doing of them. He returns to the theme of the traitor.
