John 13:19

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. NOW, [ ap' (G575 ) arti (G737 ), RATHER, 'FROM HENCEFORTH'] I TELL YOU BEFORE IT COME - consider yourselves as from this time fore-warned, THAT, WHEN IT IS COME TO PASS - instead of being staggered, YE MAY BELIEVE THAT I AM HE - rather, confirmed in your faith: and indeed this did come to pass when they deeply needed such confirmation....

19._I tell you this now, before it happen. _By this statement he reminds his disciples that, when one of their number becomes a reprobate, this is so far from being a good reason for their being discouraged, that it ought to be a more full confirmation of their faith. For if we did not see before our eyes, in the Church, what has been foretold about her distresses and struggles, a doubt might justly arise in our minds, Where are the prophecies? 18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their influence; the hypocrite, who professes to believe the Scriptures, but will not govern himself by them; and the apostate, who turns aside from Christ for a thing of naught. Thus mankind, supported by God's providence, after eating bread with Him, lift up the heel against Him! Judas went out as one weary of Jesus and his apostles. Those whose deeds are evil, love darkness rather than light....

Verse John 13:19. _THAT - YE MAY BELIEVE_] These frequent predictions of his death, so circumstantial in themselves, had the most direct tendency to confirm the disciples, not only in the belief of his being the Messiah, but also in that of his omniscience....

NOW I TELL YOU BEFORE IT COME ... - They would see by that that he had a knowledge of the heart and the power of foretelling future events, and must therefore have been sent by God. This does not imply that they had no faith before this, but that their faith would be increased and strengthened by it....

NOW I TELL YOU BEFORE IT COME,.... That is, gave them notice of this before hand, that one of them should betray him: THAT WHEN IT IS COME TO PASS; and they had seen it fulfilled exactly to a tittle, and according to this Scripture: YE MAY BELIEVE THAT I AM HE: the Lord God omniscient, who knows and declares things before they come to pass, just as they do come to pass, which none but the eternal God can do; and that he was the Saviour and Redeemer, the Messiah spoken of and promised, the very person prophesied of, in Psalm 41. John 13:1. _Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end._ Our Lord Jesus Christ had a clear foresight of all he had to endure. Future things are happily hidden from our eyes. We do not even know the moment when we shall die, nor how it will be. It is well that it is so but our Lord was able to anticipate his sufferings, by knowing all about them: «Jesus knew that his hour was come.» It was all appointed, and nothing happens to any of us by accident, chance is banished from the believer's creed. THE MEANING OF THE ACT: THE ONE EXCEPTION. The disciples recognise in Him their teacher and master. They should, therefore, follow His example by helping each other even in the lowliest services. The Master had set an example which the slave need not be ashamed to copy. If they realise that by doing such things He has made it their duty to do the same, then they will be happy in the doing of them. He returns to the theme of the traitor.
