John 13:30

He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. HE THEN HAVING RECEIVED THE SOP WENT IMMEDIATELY OUT - thus, by his own act and deed, severing himself forever from that holy society with which he never had any spiritual sympathy. AND IT WAS NIGHT - but far blacker night in the soul of Judas than in the sky over his head....

18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their influence; the hypocrite, who professes to believe the Scriptures, but will not govern himself by them; and the apostate, who turns aside from Christ for a thing of naught. Thus mankind, supported by God's providence, after eating bread with Him, lift up the heel against Him! Judas went out as one weary of Jesus and his apostles. Those whose deeds are evil, love darkness rather than light....

Verse 30. _HE - WENT IMMEDIATELY OUT: AND IT WAS NIGHT._] He set off to Jerusalem from Bethany, which was about two miles distant; and, under the _conduct_ of the _prince_ of darkness, and in the _time_ of darkness, he did this _work_ of darkness....

IT WAS NIGHT - It was in the evening, or early part of the night. What is recorded in the following chapters took place the same night....

HE THEN HAVING, RECEIVED THE SOP,.... As soon as ever he received it, he WENT IMMEDIATELY OUT; fearing lest an entire discovery should be made, and he be prevented accomplishing his design; or being more violently stirred up to it by, Satan, who after the sop entered into him, he directly went from Bethany to Jerusalem, to the chief priests, there, in order to consult and agree upon the delivery of him into their hands: AND IT WAS NIGHT; this circumstance is added, to show how eagerly he was bent upon it; that though it was night, it did not hinder or discourage him from setting out on his journey to Jerusalem; and as this was a work of darkness, the night was the fittest time for it, and was a proper emblem of the blackness of the crime he was going to perpetrate....

THE UNMASKING OF THE TRAITOR. The truth must now be told plainly. Jesus is troubled (John 12:27), and makes the solemn declaration, One of you shall betray. With the disciples-' looks of amazement contrast the Synoptic account, where their doubts are expressed. Jesus'special friend, reclining on His right, the left being the place of honour, is asked by a nod from the leader of the disciples, always ready to act on the spur of the moment, to find out secretly who is intended. The Lord's answer is apparently ambiguous. He to whom I give the sop would refer to all alike. No one (John 13:28), the Beloved Disciple included, knew why the Lord sent Judas off on an. immediate errand. HE... WENT IMMEDIATELY OUT. He ate the sop, Christ spoke to him at once, and he immediately arose and went out. The question has been much discussed whether Judas was present when the Lord's Supper was instituted.. do not consider it vitally important that this should be settled, but. am of the opinion that he was not. We have just had the account of the Passover; it was at the Passover meal that Judas ate the sop; he went out immediately, leaving the Lord and the rest of the apostles at the table. _After the Passover meal_ the Supper was ordained; then followed the touching discourses recorded by John. It will be observed that this is the order of Matthew 26:17-30. Matthew was present and undoubtedly followed the chronological order. His order is, 1. The Passover; 2. The exposure of Judas; 3.
