_SPEAK UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, AND SAY UNTO THEM, CONCERNING THE FEASTS OF THE LORD, WHICH YE SHALL PROCLAIM TO BE HOLY CONVOCATIONS, EVEN THESE ARE MY FEASTS._ Speak unto the children of Israel ... Concerning the feasts, х_ MOW`ªDEEY_ (H4150) _ YAHWEH_ (H3068), the sacred assemblies] - the times of assembling, or solemnities (Isaiah 33:20); and this is a preferable rendering, applicable to all sacred seasons mentioned in this chapter, even the day of atonement, which was observed as a fast. They were appointed by the direct authority of God and announced by a public proclamation which is called "the joyful sound" (Psalms 89:15). Those "holy convocations were evidences of divine wisdom,

Though the yearly feasts were made more remarkable by general attendance at the sanctuary, yet these must not be observed more than the sabbath. On that day they must withdraw from all business of the world. It is a sabbath of rest, typifying spiritual rest from sin, and rest in God. God's sabbaths are to be religiously observed in every private house, by every family apart, as well as by families together, in holy assemblies. The sabbath of the Lord in our dwellings will be their beauty, strength, and safety; it will sanctify, build up, and glorify them....

Verse Leviticus 23:2. _THESE ARE MY FEASTS._] The original word מועד _moad_ is properly applied to any solemn anniversary, by which great and important ecclesiastical, political, or providential facts were recorded; Genesis 1:14. Anniversaries of this kind were observed in all nations; and some of them, in consequence of scrupulously regular observation, became _chronological epochs_ of the greatest importance in history: the _Olympiads_, for example....

THE FEASTS - literally, the appointed times. So in Leviticus 23:4, Leviticus 23:37, etc. This section Leviticus 23:1 sets forth for practical guidance the relation in which the appointed times of the Lord, weekly as well as annual, stood to the ordinary occupations of the people. HOLY CONVOCATIONS - Days of sabbatical rest for the whole people; they owed their name to gatherings for religious edification, which, in later times, were probably held in every town and village in the holy land. FEASTS The feasts of Jehovah. As given to Israel, these were simply seven great religious festivals which were to be observed every year. The first three verses of Leviticus 23 (Leviticus 23:1) do not relate to the feasts but separate the sabbath from the feasts....

THE SABBATH, which is to be kept holy, _i.e._ unprofaned by any kind of work for individual profit, and marked by a religious gathering, apparently at a synagogue. The term set feast (RV) means an assembly. The same word is used in the name for the shrine, the tent of meeting. The older name for these feasts was _hag_, properly a pilgrimage; this term, however, would not apply to the Sabbath....
