_ALSO ON THE TENTH DAY OF THIS SEVENTH MONTH THERE SHALL BE A DAY OF ATONEMENT: IT SHALL BE AN HOLY CONVOCATION UNTO YOU; AND YE SHALL AFFLICT YOUR SOULS, AND OFFER AN OFFERING MADE BY FIRE UNTO THE LORD._ On the tenth day of this seventh month. On the 14th day of the first month (ecclesiastical year) the Israelites came out of Egypt; in 50 days after that the law was given from mount Sinai; then Moses was forty days on the mount (Exodus 24:18; Deuteronomy 9:9). 27._Also on the tenth day of this seventh month. _The word כפר, _caphar, _whence the noun כפרים, _cephurim, _signifies both to propitiate and to blot out guilt and accusation by means of expiation; כפרים, therefore, are atonements (_libationes_) for appeasing God; and the word is used in the plural number, because they were not under the imputation of a single kind of guilt, but had need of manifold reconciliations on account of their many and various transgressions. This was indeed done both publicly and privately throughout the rest of the year, for all the victims they offered were so many satisfactions in order to obtain pardon and to reconcile God. 23-32 the blowing of trumpets represented the preaching of the gospel, by which men are called to repent of sin, and to accept the salvation of Christ, which was signified by the day of atonement. Also it invited to rejoice in God, and become strangers and pilgrims on earth, which was denoted by the feast of Tabernacles, observed in the same month. At the beginning of the year, they were called by this sound of trumpet to shake off spiritual drowsiness, to search and try their ways, and to amend them. EXPOSITION LEVITICUS 23:8 The Feast of Unleavened Bread was instituted at the same time with the Feast of the Passover (Exodus 12:15-2), and from the beginning the two festivals were practically but one festival, never separated, though separable in idea. The Passover, strictly so called, lasted but one day, Nisan 14; the Feast of Unleavened Bread lasted seven days, Nisan 15-21. The whole made a festival of eight days, called indifferently the Feast of the Passover, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. ATONEMENT The day of Atonement, (Leviticus 23:26). The day is the same described in Lev. 16, but here the stress is laid upon the sorrow and repentance of Israel. In other words, the prophetical feature is made prominent, and that looks forward to the repentance of Israel after her regathering under the Palestinian Covenant, (Deuteronomy 30:1) preparatory to the second advent of Messiah and the establishment of the kingdom.
