_OR IF A SOUL SWEAR, PRONOUNCING WITH HIS LIPS TO DO EVIL, OR TO DO GOOD, WHATSOEVER IT BE THAT A MAN SHALL PRONOUNCE WITH AN OATH, AND IT BE HID FROM HIM; WHEN HE KNOWETH OF IT, THEN HE SHALL BE GUILTY IN ONE OF THESE._ If a soul swear - a rash oath, without duly considering the nature and consequences of the oath, perhaps inconsiderately binding himself to do anything wrong, or neglecting to perform a vow to do something good. In all such cases a person might have transgressed one of the divine commandments unwittingly, and have been afterward brought to a sense of his delinquency....

4._Or if a soul shall swear. _The Gulf is also ascribed to error and ignorance, when a person does inconsiderately what he has promised not to do; for the oath is not in that case violated, which would be criminal; (267) but in this very carelessness there is enough of wrong, because sound religion would renew the recollection of the vow. Consequently, where no anxiety (to fulfill it) is shewn, there is no serious desire to do so. But this commandment was necessary, because it might often happen that men who had pledged their faith in a vow, and had broken it in thoughtlessness, would deem themselves released from every, and would in future give themselves up to indulgence, whereas they who arrive at such a pitch of licentiousness, harden themselves more and more, until at length they throw off all reverence for God. God would therefore have vows kept faithfully, lest those who despised...

1-13 The offences here noticed are, 1. A man's concealing the truth, when he was sworn as a witness to speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. If, in such a case, for fear of offending one that has been his friend, or may be his enemy, a man refuses to give evidence, or gives it but in part, he shall bear his iniquity. And that is a heavy burden, which, if some course be not taken to get it removed, will sink a man to hell. Let all that are called at any time to be witnesses, think of this law, and be free and open in their evidence, and take heed of prevaricating. Verse Leviticus 5:4. _TO DO EVIL, OR TO DO GOOD_] It is very likely that rash promises are here intended; for if a man vow to do an act that is evil, though it would be criminal to keep such an oath or vow, yet he is guilty because he made it, and therefore must offer the _trespass-offering_. If he neglect to do the _good_ he has vowed, he is guilty, and must in both cases confess his iniquity, and bring his trespass-offering....

EXPOSITION THE SIN OFFERING—continued (Leviticus 5:1). The subject of the next thirteen verses is still the sin offering, not the trespass offering, as has been supposed by some. The first six verses state three specific cases for which sin offerings are required, and the remaining seven verses detail the concessions made to poverty in respect to the offerings required. The cases are those of a witness, of one ceremonially defiled, and of one who had sworn thoughtlessly. The concessions granted are two: two turtledoves or young pigeons are allowed instead of a lamb, and the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour, without oil or frankincense, is allowed instead of the two turtle-doves or young pigeons. SINS FOR WHICH OFFERINGS ARE NECESSARY. The first case is that of one who, when evidence in a trial is called for under a curse, deliberately conceals what he knows (there is no unwittingly here); the crime of silence is paralleled with ceremonial uncleanness. The second case is that arising from contact either with an unclean animal or from other defilement. Further details of these taboos are given in Leviticus 12-15, and a harsher law is found in Numbers 19:13; Numbers 19:20.
