_AND HE SHALL BRING HIS TRESPASS OFFERING UNTO THE LORD FOR HIS SIN WHICH HE HATH SINNED, A FEMALE FROM THE FLOCK, A LAMB OR A KID OF THE GOATS, FOR A SIN OFFERING; AND THE PRIEST SHALL MAKE AN ATONEMENT FOR HIM CONCERNING HIS SIN._ He shall bring his trespass offering, х_ 'ET_ (H853) _ 'ASHAAMOW_ (H817)]. EXPOSITION THE SIN OFFERING—continued (Leviticus 5:1). The subject of the next thirteen verses is still the sin offering, not the trespass offering, as has been supposed by some. The first six verses state three specific cases for which sin offerings are required, and the remaining seven verses detail the concessions made to poverty in respect to the offerings required. The cases are those of a witness, of one ceremonially defiled, and of one who had sworn thoughtlessly. The concessions granted are two: two turtledoves or young pigeons are allowed instead of a lamb, and the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour, without oil or frankincense, is allowed instead of the two turtle-doves or young pigeons. Either two turtledoves, or two young pigeons: WHO SHALL OFFER [THAT] WHICH [IS] FOR THE SIN [OFFERING] FIRST; that which is chosen for it, as the Targum of Jonathan; and this choice was made, not by the priest, but by the man that brought the offering, who separated it, and said, lo, this is a sin offering, and after that said, lo, this is a burnt offering a; the sin offering was offered first, which was to make atonement for sin, and then the burnt offering, to denote the divine acceptance of it; and so Ben Gersom observes, it was proper to offer the sin offering first, to atone for his sin, that after he (God) was appeased this way, he might receive his gift; for the burnt offering was as a gift. LEVITICUS 4:1 TO LEVITICUS 5:13. THE SIN OFFERING. This, and the guilt offering, whose ritual follows, are unknown before the Exile, save as fines (2 Kings 12:16; Amos 2:8). Ezek. mentions both, but is conscious of no difference between them. Probably the distinction between them grew up gradually (see on Ezekiel 5:14 ff.). The ritual is derived partly from that of the burnt offering and peace offering; partly from other old rites. It has been thought that the last clause of the _v._refers still to the neck, indicating that in this case the head of the bird was not to be wholly separated from the body.
