1-7 Though all the instances relate to our neighbour, yet it is called a trespass against the Lord. Though the person injured be mean, and even despicable, yet the injury reflects upon that God who has made the command of loving our neighbour next to that of loving himself. Human laws make a difference as to punishments; but all methods of doing wrong to others, are alike violations of the Divine law, even keeping what is found, when the owner can be discovered. Frauds are generally accompanied with lies, often with false oaths. If the offender would escape the vengeance of God, he must make ample restitution, according to his power, and seek forgiveness by faith in that one Offering which taketh away the sin of the world. The trespasses here mentioned, still are trespasses against the law of Christ, which insists as much upon justice and truth, as the law of nature, or the law of Moses....

EXPOSITION THE TRESPASS OFFERING—_continued_ (Leviticus 6:1). The next seven verses, which in the Hebrew arrangement form the conclusion of the previous chapter, enumerate cases of fraud and wrong, for which a trespass offering is required. They are moral, not ceremonial offenses. Reparation and the payment of a fine are demanded before the offering is made. LEVITICUS 6:1 AND THE LORD SPAKE. The six following verses contain a separate communication from the Lord to Moses, but in continuance of the subject which began at Le Leviticus 5:14....

THEN IT SHALL BE, BECAUSE HE HATH SINNED AND IS GUILTY,.... Owns his guilt through remorse of conscience, and makes a confession of it; or otherwise, upon conviction, without such confession he was to pay double, see Exodus 22:7 whereas, in this case it is only ordered, THAT HE SHALL RESTORE THAT WHICH HE TOOK VIOLENTLY AWAY: whether money, goods, or cattle: OR THE THING WHICH HE HATH DECEITFULLY GOTTEN; by outwitting him, by extortion, by false accusation, or detention of wages: OR THAT WHICH WAS DELIVERED HIM TO KEEP; in which he was unfaithful to his trust, be it what it will: OR THE LOST THING WHICH HE FOUND; and denied he had it....

5. THE TRESPASS OFFERING Chapter S 5:14-6:7 _ 1. The trespass against Jehovah (Leviticus 5:14)_ 2. The trespass against man (Leviticus 6:1) The brief section which gives instruction concerning the trespass offering contains twice the statement, “Jehovah spake unto Moses” (Leviticus 5:14 and Leviticus 6:1). Sin is here looked upon as an injury done. The trespass offering was always a ram without a blemish out of the flock (verses 15, 18; 6:6). The first kind is stated vaguely; committing a trespass (the word means acting unfaithfully or treacherously; it is coupled with sinning unwittingly in Leviticus 5:15; Leviticus 5:17). BECAUSE HE HATH SINNED AND IS GUILTY— Some render this, _whenever he shall have thus sinned, and is sensible of his guilt, he shall restore,_ &c. It might perhaps be rendered as nearly to the Hebrew, _it shall be, that he who shall have thus sinned, and become liable to punishment, shall restore,_ &c. The law, however, appears to refer to a voluntary acknowledgment of guilt; see Numbers 5:7. REFLECTIONS.—A variety of trespasses against our neighbour are mentioned, which, though immediately affecting him, are yet sins against God, as being breaches of his law. These are either denying what was lent us; or defrauding our partners; or imposing upon others by unjust commendation of our wares; or not returning to the owner what we find; or disowning it, when we are charged with any of these things.
