"The portion" is a supplement of our translators, and with "the anointing," is tautological х_ MISHCHAT_ (H4888) signifies not only unction, but a part, a measured out, an allotted portion, from _ MAASHACH_ (H4886), to spread out, to measure-e.g., things broad or long, as cloth, by spanning it with the hand]. THIS IS THE PORTION OF THE ANOINTING— There is nothing for _portion_ in the original: the Hebrew is, _this is the anointing of Aaron, and the anointing of his sons;_ by which is meant, "this is the _privilege_ or _portion_ of their unction or appointment to the priest's office." Ainsworth has given us many examples of similar metonymies in the _Hebrew._ Thus _divination_ is used for the _rewards_ of divination, Numbers 22:7. _Iniquity_ is often put for the _punishment_ or _desert_ of iniquity, Leviticus 7:18 of this chapter.
