7-18 Christ kept the ordinances of the law, particularly that of the passover, to teach us to observe his gospel institutions, and most of all that of the Lord's supper. Those who go upon Christ's word, need not fear disappointment. According to the orders given them, the disciples got all ready for the passover. Jesus bids this passover welcome. He desired it, though he knew his sufferings would follow, because it was in order to his Father's glory and man's redemption. He takes his leave of all passovers, signifying thereby his doing away all the ordinances of the ceremonial law, of which the passover was one of the earliest and chief. Verse Luke 22:15. _WITH DESIRE I HAVE DESIRED_] A Hebraism for, _I have_ _desired most earnestly_. Our Lord's meaning seems to be, that, having purposed to redeem a lost world by his blood, he ardently longed for the time in which he was to offer himself up. Such love did the holy Jesus bear to the human race. This _eucharistic_ passover was celebrated once, by way of anticipation, before the bloody sacrifice of the victim of salvation, and before the _deliverance_ it was appointed to commemorate; as the _figurative_ passover had been likewise once celebrated before the going out of Egypt, and the _deliverance_ of God's chosen people. _Quesnel_....

WITH DESIRE I HAVE DESIRED - This is a Hebrew form of expression, and means “I have greatly desired.” The reasons why he desired this we may suppose to have been: * That, as he was about to leave them, he was desirous once of seeing them together, and of partaking with them of one of the religious privileges of the Jewish dispensation.
