And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; AND I APPOINT UNTO YOU A KINGDOM, AS MY FATHER HATH APPOINTED UNTO ME - or, according to the order of the original text, 'And I appoint unto you, as My Father hath appointed unto Me, a kingdom.' Who is this that dispenses kingdoms, nay, the Kingdom of kingdoms, within an hour or two of His apprehension, and less than a day of His shameful death? These sublime contrasts, however, perpetually meet and entrance us in this matchless History. The 'giving of a given' Kingdom is in our Lord's usual style of speaking, in which He ever holds forth His oneness in counsel with the Father. 'So far from the high claims I advance being an unwarrantable usurpation of divine prerogatives, dishonouring to the Father, it is from Him I have My commission to be, here, to do all I do, and dispense all I bestow.' 29._And I appoint to you the kingdom. _Here he makes them not only judges, but _kings; _for he shares with them _the kingdom _which he received from _the Father _There is an emphasis in the word _appoint_, that they may not, by warmth and vehemence of desire, hasten too eagerly to possess _the kingdom _of which he alone has the lawful right to dispose. By his own example, also, he exhorts them to patience; for, though he was ordained by _the Father _to be a King, yet he was not immediately raised to his glory, but even _emptied Himself_, (Philippians 2:7,) and by the ignominy of the cross obtained kingly honor. To _eat and drink at his table _is put metaphorically for being made partakers of the same glory....

21-38 How unbecoming is the worldly ambition of being the greatest, to the character of a follower of Jesus, who took upon him the form of a servant, and humbled himself to the death of the cross! In the way to eternal happiness, we must expect to be assaulted and sifted by Satan. If he cannot destroy, he will try to disgrace or distress us. Verse 29. _I APPOINT UNTO YOU A KINGDOM, AS MY FATHER HATH_ _APPOINTED UNTO ME_] The _Codex Alexandrinus_, with some other MSS., the later _Syriac_, and _Origen_, read in the first clause, διαθηκην, _a covenant_. _I appoint unto you a COVENANT, as my Father hath_ _appointed unto me a kingdom_: - Ye shall be ministers of the new covenant, as I am king in that spiritual kingdom to which it relates. This is a curious reading: but our Lord is probably to be understood as promising that they should get a kingdom - a state of blessedness, _as_ he should get it - they _must go through much_ _tribulation_ in order to _enter into the kingdom of God_. So the Son of man _suffered_ that he might enter into his glory: for the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross, and despised the shame, and is set down on the right hand of God....

AND I APPOINT UNTO YOU A KINGDOM - He assures them here that they should “have” a kingdom - their expectations would be realized. They had continued with him; they had seen how “he” had lived, and to what trials he had been subjected; they had all along expected a kingdom, and he assures them that they should not be disappointed. AS MY FATHER ... - They had seen how God had appointed a kingdom to “him.” It was not with pomp, and splendor, and external glory, but it was in poverty, want, persecution, and trial. So would “he” appoint to them a kingdom. They should “surely” possess it; but it would be not with external splendor, but by poverty and toil.
