And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: AND HE TOOK THE CUP. Several cups of wine were partaken of, or tasted, during the somewhat elaborate rites observed in the celebration of the Passover. This was probably the first one: but it is not to be confounded with the Eucharistic cup mentioned in , and then partaken of for the first time; this Paschal cup was now partaken of for the last time. AND GAVE THANKS, AND SAID, TAKE THIS, AND DIVIDE IT AMONG YOURSELVES. A false inference has been drawn from this by some expositors-that Christ did not Himself drink of it. The contrary is obvious from His earnest desire to "eat this Passover with them," and of course to drink the Paschal cup; and in what follows. He expressly says that He did drink of it....

As Luke mentions that _the cup _was twice presented by Christ, we must inquire, in the first place, if it be a repetition, (as the Evangelists are wont frequently to say the same thing twice,) or if Christ, after having tasted the cup, repeated the same thing a second time. This latter conjecture appears to me to be probable; for we know that the holy fathers, during sacrifices, observed the solemn rite of tasting the cup; (188) and hence those words of the Psalmist, I will take the cup of salvation, and will call on the name of the Lord, (Psalms 116:13.) I have no doubt, therefore, that Christ, according to the ancient custom, tasted _the cup _in the holy feast, which otherwise could not have been correctly observed; and Luke expressly mentions this, before coming to give an account of the new mystery, which was

7-18 Christ kept the ordinances of the law, particularly that of the passover, to teach us to observe his gospel institutions, and most of all that of the Lord's supper. Those who go upon Christ's word, need not fear disappointment. According to the orders given them, the disciples got all ready for the passover. Jesus bids this passover welcome. He desired it, though he knew his sufferings would follow, because it was in order to his Father's glory and man's redemption. He takes his leave of all passovers, signifying thereby his doing away all the ordinances of the ceremonial law, of which the passover was one of the earliest and chief. That type was laid aside, because now in the kingdom of God the substance was come....

Verse Luke 22:17. _HE TOOK THE CUP_] This was not the _sacramental cup_, for that was taken _after_ supper, Luke 22:20, but was the cup which was ordinarily taken _before_ supper. _DIVIDE IT AMONG YOURSELVES_] Pass the cup from one to another; thus the cup which Christ gave to the first person on his right hand continued to be handed from one to another, till it came to the last person on his left....

AND HE TOOK THE CUP AND GAVE THANKS - This was not the “sacramental” cup, for that was taken “after” supper, Luke 22:20. This was one of the cups which were usually taken during the celebration of the Passover, and pertained to that observance. “After” he had kept this in the usual manner, he instituted the supper which bears his name, using the bread and wine which had been prepared for the Passover, and thus ingrafted the Lord’s Supper on the Passover, or superseded the Passover by another ordinance, which was intended to be perpetual....
