38._Lord, lo, here are two swords. _It was truly shameful and stupid ignorance, that the disciples, after having been so often informed about bearing the cross, imagine that they must fight with _swords _of iron. The reason was that the country was full of robbers and wild beasts, and it was necessary to carry, in their travels, some means of defense. In these verses (Lk. only) Jesus announces a change of method from that advocated in Luke 9:3; Luke 10:4. Montefiore soundly says Luke 22:35 f. must be considered apart from Luke 22:37 and especially from Luke 22:38.
