Luke 6:13._Whom also he named Apostles. _This may be explained in two ways: either that, at a subsequent period, when he introduced them into their office, he gave them this name, — or that, with a view to their future rank, he bestowed on them this title, in order to inform them why they were separated from the ordinary class, and for what purpose they were destined. The latter view agrees well with the words of Mark: for he says, that Christ _appointed twelve to be with him, and to send them forth to preach. He _intended to make them his companions, that they might afterwards receive a higher rank: for, as I have already explained, when he says, _to be with him, and to send them forth to preach, _he does not mean that both were to take place at the same time....

12-19 We often think one half hour a great deal to spend in meditation and secret prayer, but Christ was whole nights engaged in these duties. In serving God, our great care should be not to lose time, but to make the end of one good duty the beginning of another. The twelve apostles are here named; never were men so privileged, yet one of them had a devil, and proved a traitor. Those who have not faithful preaching near them, had better travel far than be without it. It is indeed worth while to go a great way to hear the word of Christ, and to go out of the way of other business for it. They came to be cured by him, and he healed them. There is a fulness of grace in Christ, and healing virtue in him, ready to go out from him, that is enough for all, enough for each. Men regard the diseases of the body as greater evils than those of their souls; but the Scripture teaches us differently....

Verse Luke 6:13. _HE CHOSE TWELVE_] εκλεξαμενος απ αυτων, _He chose_ _twelve OUT of them_. Our Lord at this time had several disciples, persons who were _converted_ to God under his ministry; and, out of these converts, he chose twelve, whom he appointed to the work of the ministry; and called them _apostles_, i.e. persons _sent_ or commissioned by himself, to preach that Gospel to others by which they had themselves been saved. These were favoured with extraordinary success: 1. Because they were brought to the knowledge of God themselves. 2. Because they received their commission from the great Head of the Church. And 3. EXPOSITION LUKE 6:1 _The Lord_'_s teaching on the question of the observance of the sabbath._ LUKE 6:1 AND IT CAME TO PASS ON THE SECOND SABBATH AFTER THE FIRST. The expression accompanying this note of time of St. Luke, "the second sabbath after the first," more literally, "the second-first sabbath," has always been a difficulty with expositors of this Gospel.
