27-36 These are hard lessons to flesh and blood. But if we are thoroughly grounded in the faith of Christ's love, this will make his commands easy to us. Every one that comes to him for washing in his blood, and knows the greatness of the mercy and the love there is in him, can say, in truth and sincerity, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Let us then aim to be merciful, even according to the mercy of our heavenly Father to us....

Verse 29. _THY CLOAK - THY COAT_] In Matthew 5:40, I have said that COAT, χιτωνα, signifies _under garment_, or _strait coat_; and CLOAK, ιματιον, means _upper garment_, or _great coat_. This interpretation is confirmed by the following observations of Bishop Pearce. The χιτων was a _tunica_, or _vestcoat_, over which the Jews and other nations threw an _outer coat_, or _gown_, called a _cloak_, Matthew 5:40, (which is meant by ιματιον,) when they went abroad, or were not at work. Hence the common people at Rome, who did not usually wear, or had no right to wear, the _toga_, are called by Horace _tunicatus popellus_, Epist. i. 7, 65. This account of the difference between the χιτων and the ιματιον appears plainly from what _Maximus Tyrius_ says...
