Verse Mark 1:2. _AS IT IS WRITTEN IN THE PROPHETS_] Rather, _As it is_ _written by Isaiah the prophet_. I think this reading should be adopted, instead of that in the common text. It is the reading of the _Codex Bezae, Vatican_, and several other MSS. of great repute. It is found also in the _Syriac, Persic, Coptic, Armenian, Gothic,_ _Vulgate_, and _Itala_ versions, and in several of the _fathers_. As this prophecy is found both in _Isaiah_ and _Malachi_, probably the reading was changed to ταιςπροφηταις, _the prophets_, that it might comprehend both. In one of ASSEMAN'S Syriac copies, both _Isaiah_ and _Malachi_ are mentioned. EXPOSITION MARK 1:1 THE BEGINNING OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. These words mean, not the title of the book, but the commencement of the narrative; and so they depend upon what follows, namely, "as it is written" (καθῶς for ὠς), "even as it is written." The words "the gospel of Jesus Christ" do not signify the book which St. Mark wrote, but the evangelical teaching of Jesus Christ. St. Mark means that the gospel announcement by Jesus Christ had such a beginning as had been predicted by Isaiah and Malachi, namely, the preaching of John the Baptist, and his testimony concerning Christ, to be fully laid open by the preaching and the death of Christ. A brief introductory section showing how the work of John the Baptist, and the baptism and temptation of Jesus, led up to the ministry in Galilee. MARK 1:1 is perhaps best taken as the title to the whole book. It may be a late addition, but it represents the writer's point of view. Like Luke, he relates what Jesus _began_ to do. This is the beginning of the story of how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brought the good news to men. There is a passage in Isaiah the prophet like this--"Lo! I send my messenger before you and he will prepare your road for you. He will be like a voice crying in the wilderness, 'Get ready the road of the Lord. Make straight the path by which he will come'." This came true when John the Baptizer emerged in the wilderness, announcing a baptism which was the sign of a repentance through which a man might find forgiveness for his sins. Mark starts the story of Jesus a long way back.
