Verse Mark 1:4. _JOHN_] The original name is _nearly_ lost in the Greek ιωαννης, and in the Latin _Johannes_, and almost _totally_ so in the English _John_. The original name is יהוחנן _Yehochanan_, compounded of יהוה חנן _Yehovah chanan_, the _grace_ or _mercy of Jehovah_: a most proper and significant name for the forerunner of the _God of_ ALL GRACE. It was John's business to proclaim the _Gospel of the _ _grace of God_, and to point out that _Lamb_ or _sacrifice of God_ _which takes away the sin of the world_. _FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS._] Or, _toward the remission _- εις αφεσιν. They were to repent, and be baptized in _reference_ to the remission of sins. REPENTANCE _prepared_ the soul for it, and BAPTISM was the _type_ or _pledge_ of it....

EXPOSITION MARK 1:1 THE BEGINNING OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. These words mean, not the title of the book, but the commencement of the narrative; and so they depend upon what follows, namely, "as it is written" (καθῶς for ὠς), "even as it is written." The words "the gospel of Jesus Christ" do not signify the book which St. Mark wrote, but the evangelical teaching of Jesus Christ. St. Mark means that the gospel announcement by Jesus Christ had such a beginning as had been predicted by Isaiah and Malachi, namely, the preaching of John the Baptist, and his testimony concerning Christ, to be fully laid open by the preaching and the death of Christ. The preaching of repentance by the Baptist was the preparation and the beginning of the evangelical preaching by Christ, of whom John was the forerunner. MARK 1:1 is perhaps best taken as the title to the whole book. It may be a late addition, but it represents the writer's point of view. Like Luke, he relates what Jesus _began_ to do. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus form in themselves the beginning: the end is not yet. Moreover, the gospel is the fact of Jesus Christ. For Mk. This is the beginning of the story of how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brought the good news to men. There is a passage in Isaiah the prophet like this--"Lo! I send my messenger before you and he will prepare your road for you. He will be like a voice crying in the wilderness, 'Get ready the road of the Lord. Make straight the path by which he will come'." This came true when John the Baptizer emerged in the wilderness, announcing a baptism which was the sign of a repentance through which a man might find forgiveness for his sins. Mark starts the story of Jesus a long way back. It did not begin with Jesus' birth; it did not even begin with John the Baptizer in the wilderness; it began with the dreams of the prophets long ago; that is to say, it began long, long ago in the mind of God.
