Mark 10:21

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? For the exposition, see the notes at Luke 18:18....

Mark 10:21._One thing thou wantest. _Christ therefore does not mean that the _young man wanted _one _Thing _beyond the keeping of the law, but in the very keeping of the law. For though the law nowhere obliges us to _sell all_, yet as it represses all sinful desires, and teaches us to _bear the cross, _as it bids us be prepared for hunger and poverty, the _young man _is very far from keeping it fully, so long as he is attached to his riches, and burns with covetousness. And he says that _one thing is wanting_, because he does not need to preach to him about fornication and murder, but to point out a particular disease, as if he were laying his finger on the sore. It ought also to be observed, that he does not only enjoin him _to sell_, but likewise to _give to the poor; _for to part with riches would not be in itself a virtue, but rather

17-22 This young ruler showed great earnestness. He asked what he should do now, that he might be happy for ever. Most ask for good to be had in this world; any good, Psalms 4:6; he asks for good to be done in this world, in order to enjoy the greatest good in the other world. Christ encouraged this address by assisting his faith, and by directing his practice. But here is a sorrowful parting between Jesus and this young man. He asks Christ what he shall do more than he has done, to obtain eternal life; and Christ puts it to him, whether he has indeed that firm belief of, and that high value for eternal life which he seems to have. Is he willing to bear a present cross, in expectation of future crown? The young man was sorry he could not be a follower of Christ upon easier terms; that he could not lay hold on eternal life, and keep hold of his worldly possessions too. He went away griev...

Verse 21. _THEN JESUS, BEHOLDING HIM_] _Looking earnestly_, εμβλεψας, or _affectionately upon him, loved him_, because of his _youth_, his _earnestness_, and his _sincerity_. _ONE THING THOU LACKEST_] What was that? A heart disengaged from the world, and a complete renunciation of it and its concerns, that he might become a proper and successful labourer in the Lord's vineyard. See Matthew 19:21. To say that it was something _else_ he lacked, when Christ explains here his own meaning, is to be _wise above_ what is _written_....

EXPOSITION MARK 10:1 INSTEAD OF THE WORDS, INTO THE COASTS OF JUDEA BY THE FARTHER SIDE OF JORDAN, the passage, by a change of reading from διὰ τοῦ to καὶ. He will run thus: _into the coasts _(_borders_)_ of Judaea and beyond Jordan. Our _Lord was now on his last progress towards Jerusalem. It would appear from St. Luke (Luke 9:51) that in the earlier part of his journey he touched the frontier of Samaria. Putting the accounts together, we conclude that, being refused by the Samaritans, he passed eastwards along their frontier, having Galilee on his left, and Samaria on his right; and then crossed the Jordan, perhaps at Scythopolis, where was a bridge, and so entered Peraea.
