And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, AND THEY WERE IN THE WAY (OR ON THE ROAD), GOING UP TO JERUSALEM - in Perea, and probably somewhere between Ephraim and Jericho, on the further side of the Jordan, and to the northeast of Jerusalem. 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused in the world. If Jesus would gratify all our desires, it would soon appear that we desire fame or authority, and are unwilling to taste of his cup, or to have his baptism; and should often be ruined by having our prayers answered. But he loves us, and will only give his people what is good for them....

Verse 32. _AND HE TOOK AGAIN THE TWELVE_] Or thus: _For having_ _again taken the twelve_, c. I translate και _for_, which signification it often bears see Luke 1:22; John 12:35, and elsewhere. This gives the reason of the _wonder_ and _fear_ of the disciples, FOR _he began to tell them on the way, what was to_ _befall him_. This sense of και, I find, is also noticed by _Rosenmuller_. AND THEY RATHER AMAZED ... - They were afraid that evil would befall him in the city; that the scribes and Pharisees, who had so often sought to kill him, would then do it. Their fear and amazement were increased when he told them what would befall him there. They were amazed that, when he knew so well what would happen, he should still persevere in going up to the city....

EXPOSITION MARK 10:1 INSTEAD OF THE WORDS, INTO THE COASTS OF JUDEA BY THE FARTHER SIDE OF JORDAN, the passage, by a change of reading from διὰ τοῦ to καὶ. He will run thus: _into the coasts _(_borders_)_ of Judaea and beyond Jordan. Our _Lord was now on his last progress towards Jerusalem. It would appear from St. Luke (Luke 9:51) that in the earlier part of his journey he touched the frontier of Samaria. Putting the accounts together, we conclude that, being refused by the Samaritans, he passed eastwards along their frontier, having Galilee on his left, and Samaria on his right; and then crossed the Jordan, perhaps at Scythopolis, where was a bridge, and so entered Peraea. JESUS LEADS THE WAY TO JERUSALEM. This paragraph might be regarded as introducing the last section of the gospel, the story of the Passion. The goal of the journey is now disclosed, and there is to be no more delay. The disciples follow in amazement (_cf. Mark 9:15_) and in fear. Did they entertain dim forebodings of death (_cf._ John 11:16), or were they simply overawed by the strange resolution of their Master? The third and most detailed prediction of the end is inserted here by Mk. It has been observed that each prediction seems independent of the others.
