23-31 Christ took this occasion to speak to his disciples about the difficulty of the salvation of those who have abundance of this world. Those who thus eagerly seek the wealth of the world, will never rightly prize Christ and his grace. Also, as to the greatness of the salvation of those who have but little of this world, and leave it for Christ. The greatest trial of a good man's constancy is, when love to Jesus calls him to give up love to friends and relatives. Even when gainers by Christ, let them still expect to suffer for him, till they reach heaven. Let us learn contentment in a low state, and to watch against the love of riches in a high one. Let us pray to be enabled to part with all, if required, in Christ's service, and to use all we are allowed to keep in his service....

Verse 30. _IN THIS TIME_] Εν τῳ καιρῳ τουτῳ, _In this very time_. Though Jews and Gentiles have conspired together to destroy both me and you, my providence shall so work that nothing shall be lacking while any thing is necessary. _And fathers_. This is added by K, upwards of _sixty_ others, _AEthiopic, Gothic, Slavonic, Saxon, Armenian, Coptic_, and in one of my own MSS. of the _Vulgate_. Some have been greatly embarrassed to find out the _literal_ truth of these promises; and, some in flat opposition to the text, have said they are all to be understood _spiritually_. But thus far is plain, that those who have left all for the sake of Christ do find, among genuine Christians, _spiritual relatives_, which are as dear to them as fathers, mothers, c. yet they have the promise of _receiving a hundredfold_ often _literally_ fulfilled: for, wherever a Christian travels among Christians

EXPOSITION MARK 10:1 INSTEAD OF THE WORDS, INTO THE COASTS OF JUDEA BY THE FARTHER SIDE OF JORDAN, the passage, by a change of reading from διὰ τοῦ to καὶ. He will run thus: _into the coasts _(_borders_)_ of Judaea and beyond Jordan. Our _Lord was now on his last progress towards Jerusalem. It would appear from St. Luke (Luke 9:51) that in the earlier part of his journey he touched the frontier of Samaria. Putting the accounts together, we conclude that, being refused by the Samaritans, he passed eastwards along their frontier, having Galilee on his left, and Samaria on his right; and then crossed the Jordan, perhaps at Scythopolis, where was a bridge, and so entered Peraea. That Mk. designed the contrast is improbable. The incident in Mark 10:17 is clearly historic. The unwillingness of Jesus to be addressed as good, His referring the seeker after eternal life back to the commandments, and the keen personal interest which the questioner aroused in Jesus (Jesus looking on form loved him, a phrase peculiar to Mk.) all these traits guarantee the historicity and originality of the story.
