Mark 13:22

For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. FOR FALSE CHRISTS AND FALSE PROPHETS SHALL RISE, AND SHALL SHOW SIGNS AND WONDERS. No one can read Josephus' account of what took place before the destruction of Jerusalem without seeing how strikingly this was fulfilled. TO SEDUCE, IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, EVEN THE ELECT - implying that this, though all but done, will prove impossible. What a precious assurance! (Compare 2 Thessalonians 2:9.)...

14-23 The Jews in rebelling against the Romans, and in persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within less than forty years after this. Such destruction and desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history. Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see abundant cause to flee without delay for refuge to Christ, and to renounce every earthly object, for the salvation of our souls....

THE ESCHATOLOGIEAL DISCOURSE. The first two verses contain our Lord's prediction of the fall of Jerusalem. To the Jews, such an anticipation would seem blasphemous (_cf._ Acts 6:14). The discourse that follows does not explicitly develop this prophecy. For the abomination of desolation (Mark 13:14) is only a vague reference to the laying waste of Jerusalem, though it does foreshadow some signal profanation of the Temple. THE THINGS TO COME (Mark 13:1-37) Mark 13:1-37 is one of the most difficult Chapter s in the New Testament for a modern reader to understand. That is because it is one of the most Jewish Chapter s in the Bible. From beginning to end it is thinking in terms of Jewish history and Jewish ideas. _for false Christs and false prophets_ Josephus tells us that false prophets and impostors prevailed on multitudes to follow them into the desert, promising there to display signs and wonders (comp. Acts 21:38); and even at the last, when the Temple was in flames, numbers of all ages flocked thither from the city upon the proclamation of a false prophet, and of six thousand assembled there on this occasion, not one escaped the fire or the sword.
