Mark 13:4

Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? TELL US, WHEN SHALL THESE THINGS BE? AND WHAT SHALL BE THE SIGN WHEN ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE FULFILLED? - "and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" [ sunteleias (G4930) tou (G3588) aioonos (G165)]. They no doubt looked upon the date of all these things as one and the same, and their notions of the things themselves were as confused as of the times of them. Our Lord takes His own way of meeting their questions....

1-4 See how little Christ values outward pomp, where there is not real purity of heart. He looks with pity upon the ruin of precious souls, and weeps over them, but we do not find him look with pity upon the ruin of a fine house. Let us then be reminded how needful it is for us to have a more lasting abode in heaven, and to be prepared for it by the influences of the Holy Spirit, sought in the earnest use of all the means of grace....

It is most probable that he left the temple by the golden gate on the east, from whence the view of the temple would be particularly striking. THE ESCHATOLOGIEAL DISCOURSE. The first two verses contain our Lord's prediction of the fall of Jerusalem. To the Jews, such an anticipation would seem blasphemous (_cf._ Acts 6:14). The discourse that follows does not explicitly develop this prophecy. For the abomination of desolation (Mark 13:14) is only a vague reference to the laying waste of Jerusalem, though it does foreshadow some signal profanation of the Temple. THE THINGS TO COME (Mark 13:1-37) Mark 13:1-37 is one of the most difficult Chapter s in the New Testament for a modern reader to understand. That is because it is one of the most Jewish Chapter s in the Bible. From beginning to end it is thinking in terms of Jewish history and Jewish ideas.
