3._And while he was sitting. _Mark mentions four disciples, _Peter, James, John, and Andrew _But neither he nor Luke states the matter so fully as Matthew; for they only say that the disciples inquired about the time of the destruction of _the temple, _and — as it was a thing difficult to be believed — what outward _sign _of it God would give from heaven. Matthew tells us that they inquired about the time of _Christ’s coming, and of the end of the world. _But it must be observed that, having believed from their infancy that the temple would stand till the end of time, and having this opinion deeply rooted in their minds, they did not suppose that, while the building _of the world _stood, the _temple _could fall to ruins. Accordingly, as soon as Christ said that _the temple _would be destroyed, their thoughts immediately turned to _the end of the world; _and—as one error leads to another—...

1-3 Christ foretells the utter ruin and destruction coming upon the temple. A believing foresight of the defacing of all worldly glory, will help to keep us from admiring it, and overvaluing it. The most beautiful body soon will be food for worms, and the most magnificent building a ruinous heap. See ye not all these things? It will do us good so to see them as to see through them, and see to the end of them. Our Lord having gone with his disciples to the Mount of Olives, he set before them the order of the times concerning the Jews, till the destruction of Jerusalem; and as to men in general till the end of the world....

Verse Matthew 24:3. _TELL US, WHEN SHALL THESE THINGS BE?_] There appear to be _three_ questions asked here by the disciples. 1st. _When shall_ _these things be_? viz. the _destruction_ of the _city, temple_, and _Jewish state_. 2dly. _What shall be the sign of thy coming_? viz. to _execute_ these judgments upon them, and to _establish_ thy own Church: and 3dly. _When shall this world end_? When wilt thou come to _judge_ the _quick_ and the _dead_? But there are some who maintain that these are but three parts of the _same_ question, and that our Lord's answers only refer to the destruction of the Jewish state, and that nothing is spoken here concerning the LAST or _judgment_ _day_. _END OF THE WORLD_] του αιωνος; or, _of the age_, viz.
