34._This generation shall not pass away. _Though Christ employs a general expression, yet he does not extend the discourses to all the miseries which would befall the Church, but merely informs them, that before a single _generation _shall have been completed, they will learn by experience the truth of what he has said. THIS GENERATION ... - This age; this race of people. A generation is about 30 or 40 years. The destruction of Jerusalem took place about forty years after this was spoken. See the notes at Matthew 16:28. TILL ALL THESE THINGS ... - Until these things shall be accomplished. Until events shall take place which shall be a fulfillment of these words, if there were nothing further intended. THIS GENERATION (Greek, "genea", the primary definition of which is, "race, kind, family, stock, breed"). (So all lexicons.)
