6_For you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. _He describes here those commotions only which arose in Judea, for we shall find him soon afterwards saying that the flame will spread much wider. As he had formerly enjoined them to _beware lest any man deceived them, _so now he bids them meet with courage _rumors of wars and wars themselves; _for they would be in danger of giving way when surrounded by calamities, especially if they had promised to themselves ease and pleasure. _For all these things must take place. _He adds this, not for the purpose of assigning a reason, but of warning them that none of _these things _happened accidentally, or without the providence of God, that they may not uselessly kick against the spur; for nothing has a more powerful efficacy to bring us into subjection, than when we acknowledge that those things which appear to be confused are regulated by the goo...

4-28 The disciples had asked concerning the times, When these things should be? Christ gave them no answer to that; but they had also asked, What shall be the sign? This question he answers fully. The prophecy first respects events near at hand, the destruction of Jerusalem, the end of the Jewish church and state, the calling of the Gentiles, and the setting up of Christ's kingdom in the world; but it also looks to the general judgment; and toward the close, points more particularly to the latter. What Christ here said to his disciples, tended more to promote caution than to satisfy their curiosity; more to prepare them for the events that should happen, than to give a distinct idea of the events. This is that good understanding of the times which all should covet, thence to infer what Israel ought to do. Our Saviour cautions his disciples to stand on their guard against false teachers....

The SECOND sign, _wars_ and _commotions_. Verse Matthew 24:6. The next signs given by our Lord are _WARS AND RUMOURS_ _OF WARS_, C.] These may be seen in _Josephus_, Ant. b. xviii. c. 9 War, b. ii. c. 10; especially as to the _rumours of wars_, when Caligula ordered his statue to be set up in the temple of God, which the Jews having refused, had every reason to expect a war with the Romans, and were in such consternation on the occasion that they even neglected to till their land....

AND YE SHALL HEAR OF WARS ... - It is recorded in the history of Rome that violent agitations prevailed in the Roman empire previous to the destruction of Jerusalem. Four emperors, Nero, Galba, Otho, and Vitellius, suffered violent deaths in the short space of eighteen months. In consequence of these changes in the government, there were commotions throughout the empire. Parties were formed, and bloody and violent wars were the consequence of attachment to particular emperors. This is the more remarkable, as at the time that the prophecy was made, the empire was in a state of peace. RUMOURS OF WARS - Wars declared or threatened, but not carried into execution. Josephus says that Bardanes, and after him Vologeses, declared war against the Jews, but it was not carried into execution, _Antig_. xx. 34. It is probable that copyists expanded the saying by adding such natural expressions as “_all things_ must take place,” or “_these things_ must take place,” or “_all these things_ must take place,” If any of these had been the original reading, there is no satisfactory reason that would account for its deletion....
