Matthew 26:36._Then Jesus cometh with them. _Luke mentions _the mountain of Olives _only. Mark and Matthew add a more minute description of the place. But Luke expresses what is still more to the purpose, that Christ came there _according to his custom. _Hence we infer, that he did not seek retirement for the purpose of concealing himself, but, as if he had made an assignation with his enemies, he presented himself to death. On this account John says (John 18:2) that _the place was known _to the traitor, _because Jesus was wont to come there frequently. _In this passage, therefore, his obedience is again described to us, because he could not have appeased the Father but by a voluntary death. _Sit here. _By leaving the disciples at a distance, he spares their weakness; as if a man, perceiving t

Christ took with him into that part of the garden where he suffered his agony, only those who had witnessed his glory in his transfiguration. Those are best prepared to suffer with Christ, who have by faith beheld his glory. The words used denote the most entire dejection, amazement, anguish, and horror of mind; the state of one surrounded with sorrows, overwhelmed with miseries, and almost swallowed up with terror and dismay. Verse 36. _A PLACE CALLED GETHSEMANE_] A garden at the foot of the mount of Olives. The name seems to be formed from גת _gath, a_ _press_, and סמן _shemen, oil_; probably the place where the produce of the mount of Olives was prepared for use. EXPOSITION Ch. 26-28:20 THUS JESUS ENTERS UPON HIS KINGDOM. Before attempting to expound this most momentous section of the gospel history, we must make up our minds concerning the solution of the difficulties which are involved in some details in the account of the Supper. The supposed discrepancy between the narrative of the synoptists and that of St. John has exercised the minds of commentators from the earliest times unto the present, and enormous ingenuity has been expended in endeavouring to harmonize what are regarded as conflicting statements. The two chief difficulties are these: According to the synoptists, as generally understood, our Lord and his apostles ate the Passover, _i.e. _the Paschal lamb, when he instituted the Holy Communion; according to St. John, the death of Christ took place before the Passover was celebrated.
