Matthew 26:45._Sleep on now, and take your rest. _It is plain enough, that Christ now speaks ironically, but we must, at the same time, attend to the object of the irony. For Christ, having gained nothing by warning his disciples, not only gives an indirect reproof of their indifference, but threatens, that how indolent so ever they may choose to be, no longer delay will be allowed them. The meaning therefore is, “Having hitherto wasted my words on you, I shall now come to exhort you; but whatever permission I may give you to _sleep, _the enemies will not allow it to you, but will compel you to watch against your will.” In Mark, it is accordingly added, _It is enough; _as if he had said, that there is no more time for _sleeping. _And this is the way in which the Lord usually chastises the indolence of men, that those who wax deaf to words may at length be compelled, by

The words used denote the most entire dejection, amazement, anguish, and horror of mind; the state of one surrounded with sorrows, overwhelmed with miseries, and almost swallowed up with terror and dismay. Verse 45. _SLEEP ON NOW, AND TAKE YOUR REST_] Perhaps it might be better to read these words interrogatively, and paraphrase them thus: _Do ye sleep on still_? Will no warnings avail? Will no danger excite you to watchfulness and prayer? _My hour _- in which I am to be delivered up, is at _hand_; therefore now think of your own personal safety. _THE SON OF MAN IS BETRAYED INTO THE HANDS OF SINNERS._] αμαρτωλων, viz. the _Gentiles_ or _heathens_, who were generally distinguished by this appellation from the Jews. Here it probably means the Roman cohort that was stationed on festivals for the defence of the temple. EXPOSITION Ch. 26-28:20 THUS JESUS ENTERS UPON HIS KINGDOM. Before attempting to expound this most momentous section of the gospel history, we must make up our minds concerning the solution of the difficulties which are involved in some details in the account of the Supper. The supposed discrepancy between the narrative of the synoptists and that of St. John has exercised the minds of commentators from the earliest times unto the present, and enormous ingenuity has been expended in endeavouring to harmonize what are regarded as conflicting statements. The two chief difficulties are these: According to the synoptists, as generally understood, our Lord and his apostles ate the Passover, _i.e. _the Paschal lamb, when he instituted the Holy Communion; according to St. John, the death of Christ took place before the Passover was celebrated.
