42._Again he went away a second time. _By these words Christ seems as if, having subdued fear, he came with greater freedom and courage to submit to the will of _the Father; _for he no longer asks to have _the cup removed from him, _but, leaving out this prayer, insists rather on obeying the purpose of God. But according to Mark, this progress is not described; and even when Christ returned _a second time, _we are told that he repeated _the same prayer; _and, indeed, I have no doubt, that at each of the times when he prayed, fear and horror impelled him to ask that he might be delivered from death. (207) Yet it is probable that, at _the second time, _he labored more to yield obedience to the Father, and that the first encounter with temptation animated him to approach death with greater confidence.Luke does not expressly relate that he prayed three several times, but only says that, w

Those are best prepared to suffer with Christ, who have by faith beheld his glory. The words used denote the most entire dejection, amazement, anguish, and horror of mind; the state of one surrounded with sorrows, overwhelmed with miseries, and almost swallowed up with terror and dismay. Verse 42. _O MY FATHER, IF THIS CUP MAY NOT PASS AWAY FROM ME_] _If it be not possible _- to redeem fallen man, _unless I drink this_ _cup_, unless I suffer death for them; _thy will be done _- I am content to suffer whatever may be requisite to accomplish the great design. In this address the _humanity_ of Christ most evidently appears; for it was his _humanity_ alone that could _suffer_; and if it did not appear that he had _felt_ these sufferings, it would have been a presumption that he had _not_ suffered, and consequently made no _atonement_. And had he not appeared to have been perfectly _resigned_ in these sufferings, his sacrifice could not have been a _free-will_ but a _constrained_ offering, and therefore of no use to the salvation of mankind....

EXPOSITION Ch. 26-28:20 THUS JESUS ENTERS UPON HIS KINGDOM. Before attempting to expound this most momentous section of the gospel history, we must make up our minds concerning the solution of the difficulties which are involved in some details in the account of the Supper. The supposed discrepancy between the narrative of the synoptists and that of St. John has exercised the minds of commentators from the earliest times unto the present, and enormous ingenuity has been expended in endeavouring to harmonize what are regarded as conflicting statements. The two chief difficulties are these: According to the synoptists, as generally understood, our Lord and his apostles ate the Passover, _i.e. _the Paschal lamb, when he instituted the Holy Communion; according to St. John, the death of Christ took place before the Passover was celebrated. Hence

HE WENT AWAY AGAIN THE SECOND TIME,.... To the same place as before, or at some little distance; after he had reproved his disciples for their sleeping, and had exhorted them to watchfulness and prayer, suggesting the danger they were liable to, and the condition they were in: AND PRAYED, SAYING, O MY FATHER, IF THIS CUP MAY NOT PASS AWAY FROM ME EXCEPT I DRINK IT, THY WILL BE DONE. The sense of this prayer to his God and Father is, that if his sufferings and death could not be dispensed with; if it was not consistent with the decrees of God, and the covenant of grace, that he should be excused from them; or if the glory of God, and the salvation of his people required it, that he must drink up that bitter cup, he was content to do it; desiring in all things to submit unto, and to fulfil his Father's will, though it was so irksome and disagreeable to nature....
