57-61 In the burial of Christ was nothing of pomp or solemnity. As Christ had not a house of his own, wherein to lay his head, while he lived, so he had not a grave of his own, wherein to lay his body, when he was dead. Our Lord Jesus, who had no sin of his own, had no grave of his own. The Jews designed that he should have made his grave with the wicked, should have been buried with the thieves with whom he was crucified, but God overruled it, so that he should make it with the rich in his death, Isaiah 53:9. And although to the eye of man the beholding a funeral may cause terror, yet if we remember how Christ by his burial has changed the nature of the grave to believers, it should make us rejoice. And we are ever to imitate Christ's burial in being continually occupied in the spiritual burial of our sins....

Verse Matthew 27:60. _LAID IT IN HIS OWN NEW TOMB_] To all human appearance the body of Christ must have had the same burial-place with those of the two robbers, as he was numbered with the _transgressors_, and suffered with them; for _then_ he was a sacrifice, bearing the sin of the world in his own body on the tree; but now the sacrifice is offered, the atonement made and accepted, he is no longer to be _enrolled_ with the _transgressors_, and, according to a prophecy delivered nearly seven hundred years before that time, he is to have the burying-place of a rich man. IN HIS OWN NEW TOMB - John says John 19:41 that this was in a garden that was “in” or “near” the place where he was crucified. This tomb Joseph had prepared for himself, as was not uncommon among the Jews. Compare the notes at Isaiah 22:16. In this tomb Luke and John inform us that no man had been laid. This was so ordered, in the providence of God, doubtless, that there might be no suspicion about his identity when he rose; that it might not be alleged that another person had risen, or that he was raised by touching the bones of some prophet, as happened to the corpse that touched the bones of Elisha, 2 Kings 13:21. THE BURIAL OF JESUS (Mark 15:42 *, Luke 23:50). Mt. is the briefest of the three; he omits Pilate's inquiry of the centurion (which Mk. gives) and the description of Joseph (Mk., Lk.). He simply calls him a rich man, Jesus-' disciple. Perhaps he thought that by calling him a councilor he might be grouping him with those who condemned Jesus; a rich man may be a reminiscence of Isaiah 53:9....
