9._Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet. _How the name of _Jeremiah _crept in, I confess that I do not know nor do I give myself much trouble to inquire. The passage itself plainly shows that the name of _Jeremiah _has been put down by mistake, instead of Zechariah, (Zechariah 11:13;) for in _Jeremiah _we find nothing of this sort, nor any thing that even approaches to it. Now that other passage, if some degree of skill be not used in applying it, might seem to have been improperly distorted to a wrong meaning; but if we attend to the rule which the apostles followed in quoting Scripture, we shall easily perceive that what we find there is highly applicable to Christ. Verse Matthew 27:9. _JEREMY THE PROPHET_] The words quoted here are not found in the Prophet _Jeremiah_, but in Zechariah 11:13. But St. Jerome says that a Hebrew of the sect of the Nazarenes showed him this prophecy in a Hebrew apocryphal copy of Jeremiah; but probably they were _inserted_ there only to countenance the quotation here. One of Colbert's, a MS. of the eleventh century, has ζαξαριου, _Zechariah_; so has the later Syriac in the margin, and a copy of the Arabic quoted by _Bengel_. Words similar to these are recorded in Zechariah 11:12, and from that place this quotation has been doubtless made. Much difficulty has been experienced in explaining this quotation. The evangelist here says it was spoken by Jeremy the prophet; whereas in his prophecy there is no mention of any such thing. There is indeed an account of his buying his uncle Hanameel's son's field, in Jeremiah 32:7, but not a word of a potter, or a potter's field, or of the price of it, thirty pieces of silver; and that as a price at which he, or any other person was valued; but the passage which is manifestly referred to, stands in Zechariah 11:12, where are these words, "and I said unto them,
