When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. WHEN (THERE WERE) NO DEPTHS, I WAS BROUGHT FORTH; WHEN (THERE WERE) NO FOUNTAINS ABOUNDING WITH WATER. "Brought forth" [from chuwl (H2342)] is literally applied to birth by parturition; but it is transferred also to the production of things in the way that is after their kind (Job 26:5 - if the English version be correct there; Deuteronomy 32:18, "God that formed thee" - namely, by spiritual generation). 22-31 The Son of God declares himself to have been engaged in the creation of the world. How able, how fit is the Son of God to be the Saviour of the world, who was the Creator of it! The Son of God was ordained, before the world, to that great work. Does he delight in saving wretched sinners, and shall not we delight in his salvation?...

See Genesis 1:2. _I WAS BROUGHT FORTH_] חוללתי _cholalti_, "I was produced as by labouring throes." Mr. _Parkhurst_ thinks that the heathen poets derived their idea of _Minerva's_ (wisdom's) being born of Jupiter's brain, from some such high poetic personification as that in the text....

She is contrasted with the strange woman of Proverbs 7:1; and the exceeding greatness of the blessings which she offers exhibits in the most marked manner the nothingness of the deceiver's gifts. WHEN [THERE WERE] NO DEPTHS, I WAS BROUGHT FORTH,.... Not only in the decree of God, as the head of the elect; foreordained to be the Redeemer of them, and to be the propitiation for their sins; and appointed the Judge of the world, and heir of all things; but "was begotten", as the Targum and Syriac version; the Septuagint is, "he begot me"; and so it is to be understood of the eternal generation and sonship of Christ; for the word חוללתי is used of generation, Job 15:7. PROVERBS 8. WISDOM SPEAKS IN HER OWN PERSON. This chapter forms at once the nucleus and the climax of this section of the book. The series of addresses on practical wisdom is fitly closed by a profounder presentation of wisdom as the moving principle in the ways of God. It reinforces the practical maxims of Proverbs 8:1 with the fundamental principle that the wise man is in harmony with God. Its date probably fixes the date of the whole section (see Introduction, and for a fuller discussion especially Cheyne, _Job and Solomon,_ pp. 156f.). The relation of the conception of Wisdom personified to the Stoic Logos and to Greek philosophy in general cannot be discussed here.
