Proverbs 8:35

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. FOR WHOSO FINDETH ME FINDETH LIFE, AND SHALL OBTAIN FAVOUR OF THE LORD. "Findeth me," after long "watching daily at my gates (Proverbs 8:34). It is God really who gives, though we are said to find; because we must seek with all our energy, as if all depended on our earnestness. 'Life" - Hebrew, 'lives;' namely, that of the present world and the world to come. He who seeks so as to find, "shall obtain" - literally, shall draw forth [ puwq (H6329)], as in a continuous stream, a blessing heretofore hidden, but now granted, at once precious and abundant (Gejer) - namely, the "favour of the Lord," including in it every other blessing (cf....

32-36 Surely we should hearken to Christ's voice with the readiness of children. Let us all be wise, and not refuse such mercy. Blessed are those who hear the Saviour's voice, and wait on him with daily reading, meditation, and prayer. The children of the world find time for vain amusements, without neglecting what they deem the one thing needful. Does it not show contempt of Wisdom's instructions, when people professing godliness, seek excuses for neglecting the means of grace? Christ is Wisdom, and he is Life to all believers; nor can we obtain God's favour, unless we find Christ, and are found in him. Those who offend Christ deceive themselves; sin is a wrong to the soul. Sinners die because they will die, which justifies God when he judges....

Verse Proverbs 8:35. _WHOSO FINDETH ME_] The wisdom that comes from God, teaching to avoid evil and cleave to that which is good; _findeth_ _life_-gets that knowledge which qualifies him to answer the _purposes_ for which he was _made_; for he is _quickened with_ Christ, and made a partaker of the Divine life. _Christ dwells in his heart_ _by faith_; he _lives a new life_, for Christ _liveth_ in him; the law of the _spirit of life_ in Christ Jesus makes him free from the _law_ of _sin_ and _death_. _And shall obtain favour of the Lord_. The more he walks after the Divine counsel, the more he obtains of the Divine image; and the more he resembles his Maker, the more he partakes of the Divine favour....

Wisdom then is the only true life. The Word, the Light, is also the Life of man John 1:4. The eternal life is to know God and Christ John 17:3....

PROVERBS 8. WISDOM SPEAKS IN HER OWN PERSON. This chapter forms at once the nucleus and the climax of this section of the book. The series of addresses on practical wisdom is fitly closed by a profounder presentation of wisdom as the moving principle in the ways of God. It reinforces the practical maxims of Proverbs 8:1 with the fundamental principle that the wise man is in harmony with God. Its date probably fixes the date of the whole section (see Introduction, and for a fuller discussion especially Cheyne, _Job and Solomon,_ pp. 156f.).
