Psalms 145:14

The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. THE LORD UPHOLDETH ALL THAT FALL - namely, the godly when they fall (; ). AND RAISETH UP ALL (THOSE THAT BE) BOWED DOWN. borrows this verse....

14._Jehovah upholding all the falling_. He gives instances of the goodness and mercy of God, such as make it evident that God reigns only for the promotion of the general welfare of mankind. By_the falling_, and _those who are bowed down_, he means figuratively those who are overwhelmed by adversity, and would sink at once, were not God to extend his hand for their support. God, in short, has respect to the troubles of men, and helps such as are in distress, so that all ought not only to look upon his divine government with reverence, but willingly and cordially submit themselves to it. Another lesson taught us is, that none will be disappointed who seeks comfort from God in his affliction....

10-21 All God's works show forth his praises. He satisfies the desire of every living thing, except the unreasonable children of men, who are satisfied with nothing. He does good to all the children of men; his own people in a special manner. Many children of God, who have been ready to fall into sin, to fall into despair, have tasted his goodness in preventing their falls, or recovering them speedily by his graces and comforts. Verse Psalms 145:14. _THE LORD UPHOLDETH ALL THAT FALL_] נפלים _nophelim_, the _falling_, or those who are not able to keep their feet; the weak. He _shores_ them up; he is their _prop_. No man falls through his own weakness _merely_; if he rely on God, the strongest foe cannot shake him....

THE LORD UPHOLDETH ALL THAT FALL - The word used here is a participle, literally, “The Lord sustaining;” that is, the Lord is a Sustainer or Upholder of all that fall. The allusion is to those who have no power to go of themselves; who would sink under the burdens of life if they were not supported. The idea is, that it is a characteristic of the Lord, that he does sustain such; that all such may confidently look to him to uphold them. AND RAISETH UP ALL THOSE THAT BE BOWED DOWN - The word here also is a participle: “he is lifting up;” that is, he is a lifter up. The reference is to those who are bent and bowed under the duties, the cares, the trials of life; who go bowed down under those burdens. God is able to strengthen them so that they can bear those burdens without being crushed under them....

EXPOSITION WITH another hymn of praise, this late collection of Davidical psalms, previously omitted from the Psalter, terminates. Like verses 25. and 34; also Davidical, this psalm is alphabetic, and also, like them, it is incomplete, the letter _nun _being omitted. Like most of the ether alphabetical psalms, it consists of meditations on a single theme, which is here the righteousness and goodness of God (1) to men in general; (2) to his own people; and (3) and more especially, to those that suffer. The metrical arrangement of the psalm is into three stanzas of seven verses each. THE LORD UPHOLDETH ALL THAT FALL,.... Not all that fell in Adam, as all mankind did; nor all that fall into sin, as every man does; and therefore not those that fall into hell: but this is to be understood of the subjects of Christ's kingdom, of which the psalmist is speaking; who does that which no mortal king can do, as Aben Ezra observes: another king raises up one, and depresses another; supports one, and lets another fall: but the Lord upholds all his people and subjects with the right hand of his righteousness; though they are liable to fall into sin, and in many instances do fall, and into various temptations and afflictions; yet he sustains and upholds them, that they shall not fall finally and totally by sin, nor be overwhelmed and crushed by their heavy afflictions. I am going to preach about prayer, so we will read «David's Psalm of praise.» Thus we shall have two parts of true worship. Psalms 145:1. _I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever._ Notice how long David expected to praise God. He was going to praise God for ever, and then after that, «for ever and ever.» «'Every day will I bless thee,' that is, when I do not seem to be partaking of any choice temporal blessing, I will still bless thee. When I sit like Job on the dunghill, ‘every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name,' thy character, all that has to do with thee, ‘for ever and ever.'» The first two verses are the preface of the Psalm; now the psalmist begins his music:...

PSALM 143-145 In Psalms 143:1 the enemy is mentioned again, the enemy who pursued David. “For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has smitten my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have long been dead.” How this again reminds us of the death experience of the pious remnant when the man of sin, the Antichrist will rule in Israel's land. Prayer for deliverance follows. Hear me speedily--Hide not Thy face from me--Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness--Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies, I flee unto Thee to hide me! CXLV. THE NATURE OF YAHWEH. This Ps., which borrows from very late sources (Psalms 145:13, _e.g._ is translated verbally from the Aramaic of Daniel 4:3), is a useful summary of the Divine attributes, as a pious Jew conceived them. For God is mighty and glorious, kindly and compassionate. At the same time, He will destroy the wicked. The Ps. is alphabetical, each verse beginning with a letter of the Heb. alphabet in due succession. By some accident the letter Nun is omitted, but the lost verse can be supplied from the LXX.
