He does not now speak of God’s goodness merely in providing all his creatures with their daily food, but comprehends other parts of his providence, as in correcting men for their sins, restraining the wicked, trying the patience of his people under the cross, and governing the world by judgments which are often inscrutable to us. THE LORD IS RIGHTEOUS IN ALL HIS WAYS - In his own character; in his laws; in his providential dealings; in his arrangements for the redemption and salvation of man. In his own character he is what it is desirable that a God should be; in all his laws he ordains that only which it is desirable should be enacted; in all his dealings with people he does that which it is desirable should be done. He violates no right; he wrongs no one; he demands of no one a service which would be unjust; he makes no arrangements for pardon and salvation which it is not best should be made. EXPOSITION WITH another hymn of praise, this late collection of Davidical psalms, previously omitted from the Psalter, terminates. Like verses 25. and 34; also Davidical, this psalm is alphabetic, and also, like them, it is incomplete, the letter _nun _being omitted. Like most of the ether alphabetical psalms, it consists of meditations on a single theme, which is here the righteousness and goodness of God (1) to men in general; (2) to his own people; and (3) and more especially, to those that suffer. I am going to preach about prayer, so we will read «David's Psalm of praise.» Thus we shall have two parts of true worship. PSALM 143-145 In Psalms 143:1 the enemy is mentioned again, the enemy who pursued David. “For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has smitten my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have long been dead.” How this again reminds us of the death experience of the pious remnant when the man of sin, the Antichrist will rule in Israel's land. CXLV. THE NATURE OF YAHWEH. This Ps., which borrows from very late sources (Psalms 145:13, _e.g._ is translated verbally from the Aramaic of Daniel 4:3), is a useful summary of the Divine attributes, as a pious Jew conceived them. For God is mighty and glorious, kindly and compassionate. At the same time, He will destroy the wicked. The Ps. is alphabetical, each verse beginning with a letter of the Heb. alphabet in due succession. By some accident the letter Nun is omitted, but the lost verse can be supplied from the LXX.
