Psalms 145:9

The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. THE LORD IS GOOD TO ALL - much more to His own people, who appreciate and ever praise His goodness. AND HIS TENDER MERCIES ARE OVER ALL HIS WORKS. How much more over His children? (.) If He has a compassionate regard for His creatures, the works of His hands in the kingdom of nature, and 'feedeth the young ravens which cry' (), He surely will 'not forsake the works of His own hands' () in the kingdom of grace, of which David's enduring seed, Messiah, is the head....

9._Jehovah is good to all_, _etc_. The truth here stated is of wider application than the former, for the declaration of David is to the effect, that not only does God, with fatherly indulgence and clemency, forgive sin, but is good to all without discrimination, as he makes his sun to rise upon the good and upon the wicked. (Matthew 5:45.) Forgiveness of sin is a treasure from which the wicked are excluded, but their sin and depravity does not prevent God from showering down his goodness upon them, which they appropriate without being at all sensible of it. Meanwhile believers, and they only, know what it is to enjoy a reconciled God, as elsewhere it is said — “Come ye to him, and be ye enlightened, and your faces shall not be ashamed; taste and see that the Lord is good.” ...

1-9 Those who, under troubles and temptations, abound in fervent prayer, shall in due season abound in grateful praise, which is the true language of holy joy. Especially we should speak of God's wondrous work of redemption, while we declare his greatness. For no deliverance of the Israelites, nor the punishment of sinners, so clearly proclaims the justice of God, as the cross of Christ exhibits it to the enlightened mind. It may be truly said of our Lord Jesus Christ, that his words are words of goodness and grace; his works are works of goodness and grace. He is full of compassion; hence he came into the world to save sinners. When on earth, he showed his compassion both to the bodies and souls of men, by healing the one, and making wise the other. He is of great mercy, a merciful High Priest, through whom God is merciful to sinners....

THE LORD IS GOOD TO ALL - To all his creatures. That is, he is kind and compassionate toward them; he is disposed and ready to do them good. There is not one of them whom he is not ready and willing to bless; not one whose happiness would not be agreeable to him, or whose welfare he is not ready to promote. Compare Psalms 100:5. AND HIS TENDER MERCIES ARE OVER ALL HIS WORKS - In all that he has made there is evidence that he is a kind and benevolent God. He has a heart to love, to bless, what he has made; everywhere arrangements are made for happiness; he is not disposed to cast off the feeble, the erring, and the suffering; he is willing to receive back again those who have wandered from him, to pardon the offending, to wipe away the tears of the sorrowful....

EXPOSITION WITH another hymn of praise, this late collection of Davidical psalms, previously omitted from the Psalter, terminates. Like verses 25. and 34; also Davidical, this psalm is alphabetic, and also, like them, it is incomplete, the letter _nun _being omitted. Like most of the ether alphabetical psalms, it consists of meditations on a single theme, which is here the righteousness and goodness of God (1) to men in general; (2) to his own people; and (3) and more especially, to those that suffer. The metrical arrangement of the psalm is into three stanzas of seven verses each. Which is to be understood not of the general and providential goodness of God to all men, to all his creatures, and the works of his hands; but of the special goodness of Christ before mentioned, Psalms 145:7; which extends to all the chosen people of God; who are all loved by Christ, redeemed by him, justified and glorified by him; and to Gentiles as well as Jews; for whom he tasted death, laid down his life a ransom for them, and became the propitiation for their sins. I am going to preach about prayer, so we will read «David's Psalm of praise.» Thus we shall have two parts of true worship. Psalms 145:1. _I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. PSALM 143-145 In Psalms 143:1 the enemy is mentioned again, the enemy who pursued David. “For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has smitten my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have long been dead.” How this again reminds us of the death experience of the pious remnant when the man of sin, the Antichrist will rule in Israel's land. CXLV. THE NATURE OF YAHWEH. This Ps., which borrows from very late sources (Psalms 145:13, _e.g._ is translated verbally from the Aramaic of Daniel 4:3), is a useful summary of the Divine attributes, as a pious Jew conceived them. For God is mighty and glorious, kindly and compassionate. At the same time, He will destroy the wicked. The Ps. is alphabetical, each verse beginning with a letter of the Heb. alphabet in due succession. By some accident the letter Nun is omitted, but the lost verse can be supplied from the LXX.
