Psalms 145:6

And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness. AND MEN SHALL SPEAK OF THE MIGHT OF THY TERRIBLE ACTS; AND I WILL DECLARE THY GREATNESS. The Qeri' reads thus, in the singular; but the Khethibh reads the plural, 'thy great deeds;' which answers better to the parallel, "thy terrible acts." The thought in is resumed here....

1-9 Those who, under troubles and temptations, abound in fervent prayer, shall in due season abound in grateful praise, which is the true language of holy joy. Especially we should speak of God's wondrous work of redemption, while we declare his greatness. For no deliverance of the Israelites, nor the punishment of sinners, so clearly proclaims the justice of God, as the cross of Christ exhibits it to the enlightened mind. It may be truly said of our Lord Jesus Christ, that his words are words of goodness and grace; his works are works of goodness and grace. He is full of compassion; hence he came into the world to save sinners. When on earth, he showed his compassion both to the bodies and souls of men, by healing the one, and making wise the other. He is of great mercy, a merciful High Priest, through whom God is merciful to sinners....

AND MEN SHALL SPEAK OF THE MIGHT OF THY TERRIBLE ACTS - The force, the power of those things done by thee which are suited to inspire fear or reverence. The great power displayed in those acts shall be a ground or reason for celebrating thy praise. The manifestations of that power will so deeply impress the minds of people, that they will be led to speak of them. AND I WILL DECLARE THY GREATNESS - Hebrew, “And thy greatness, I will declare it.” In respect to that, I will recount it, or I will make it known to others....

EXPOSITION WITH another hymn of praise, this late collection of Davidical psalms, previously omitted from the Psalter, terminates. Like verses 25. and 34; also Davidical, this psalm is alphabetic, and also, like them, it is incomplete, the letter _nun _being omitted. Like most of the ether alphabetical psalms, it consists of meditations on a single theme, which is here the righteousness and goodness of God (1) to men in general; (2) to his own people; and (3) and more especially, to those that suffer. The metrical arrangement of the psalm is into three stanzas of seven verses each. The terrible things of Christ, which his right hand has taught him, and his mighty power has performed; such as the destruction of a disobedient and ungodly world by a flood, to whom he preached by his Spirit in the days of Noah; the burning of Sodom and Gomorrah by raining on them fire and brimstone from the Lord out of heaven; and the dreadful things he did in Egypt and at the Red sea by the hands of Moses; these, men or saints of the former dispensation, in, before, and after the times of David, could speak of: there are others done by him on the cross, as the bruising the serpent's head, destroying his works, and him himself with his principalities and powers; and at the time of his sufferings, when the sun was darkened at noon day, the earth quaked, the rocks were split, the vail of the temple rent in twain, and graves ope...

I am going to preach about prayer, so we will read «David's Psalm of praise.» Thus we shall have two parts of true worship. Psalms 145:1. _I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever._ Notice how long David expected to praise God. He was going to praise God for ever, and then after that, «for ever and ever.» «'Every day will I bless thee,' that is, when I do not seem to be partaking of any choice temporal blessing, I will still bless thee. When I sit like Job on the dunghill, ‘every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name,' thy character, all that has to do with thee, ‘for ever and ever.'» The first two verses are the preface of the Psalm; now the psalmist begins his music:...

PSALM 143-145 In Psalms 143:1 the enemy is mentioned again, the enemy who pursued David. “For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has smitten my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have long been dead.” How this again reminds us of the death experience of the pious remnant when the man of sin, the Antichrist will rule in Israel's land. Prayer for deliverance follows. Hear me speedily--Hide not Thy face from me--Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness--Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies, I flee unto Thee to hide me! The next Psalm riseth higher. Faith lays hold on God. Israel, as David did, will look in faith to Him who has the power to deliver His trusting ones. “My Goodness, and my Fortress; my high tower and my deliverer; my shield and He in whom I trust; who subdueth the peoples under me” (literal translation). CXLV. THE NATURE OF YAHWEH. This Ps., which borrows from very late sources (Psalms 145:13, _e.g._ is translated verbally from the Aramaic of Daniel 4:3), is a useful summary of the Divine attributes, as a pious Jew conceived them. For God is mighty and glorious, kindly and compassionate. At the same time, He will destroy the wicked. The Ps. is alphabetical, each verse beginning with a letter of the Heb. alphabet in due succession. By some accident the letter Nun is omitted, but the lost verse can be supplied from the LXX. It stood after Psalms 145:13 and ran, Faithful is Yahweh in his words and holy in all his works. Psalms 145

Jehovah, Who is "the great, mighty, and terrible God" (Deuteronomy 10:17), manifests Himself not only in -mighty acts" of deliverance (Psalms 145:4), but in -terrible acts" of judgement, which inspire His enemies with terror, and His people with reverence. Cp. Psalms 65:5. _Might_is a different word from that in Psalms 145:4_; Psalms 145:12_, and may be rendered _strength_, to bring out the connexion of the two words with the epithets _strong and mighty_in...
