WITH HIM THAT IS NOT HERE WITH US - i. e. as the Jews explain, posterity; which throughout all generations was to be taken as bound by the act and deed of those present and living....

Who are before specified according to their dignity, age, sex, and station of life; or rather, "but [as] with him that standeth", c. AND SO WITH [HIM] THAT [IS] NOT HERE WITH US THIS DAY detained at home by illness and indisposition of body, or by one providence or another; so that they could not come out of their tents, and make their appearance before the tabernacle; though Jarchi interprets this of the people of future generations....

DEUTERONOMY 29:1 belongs, as in the Heb. Bible, to the preceding chapter. It is the formal ending of the great discourse (Deuteronomy 4:44, Deuteronomy 12-26, Deuteronomy 28). Deuteronomy 29 (except Deuteronomy 29:1) and Deuteronomy 30 form ostensibly Moses-' third address, in the course of which Israel is urged to obey Yahweh and to enter into covenant relations with Him (Deuteronomy 29:2), words of warning (Deuteronomy 29:16) being followed by words of promise ...

_VER._ 15. _ALSO WITH HIM THAT IS NOT HERE WITH US THIS DAY_— That is, say the generality of interpreters, "I renew this covenant with you, not only for yourselves who are here present, but also for your posterity to latest ages." But Houbigant is of opinion, that these words of Moses are of the same import with those of St. Paul, _Jews and barbarians;_ or, _the Jew first, and afterwards the Greek: with us,_ signifying the Jewish nation; the other words, the Gentiles with whom God entered into the same covenant which he made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because the Gentiles were hereafter to inherit the same faith; and there can be no doubt, he says, that the words, _him who is not here with us this day,_ plainly denote other men than the Jews themselves....
