22-28 Idolatry would be the ruin of their nation. It is no new thing for God to bring desolating judgments on a people near to him in profession. He never does this without good reason. It concerns us to seek for the reason, that we may give glory to God, and take warning to ourselves. Thus the law of Moses leaves sinners under the curse, and rooted out of the Lord's land; but the grace of Christ toward penitent, believing sinners, plants them again in their land; and they shall no more be pulled up, being kept by the power of God....

Verse Deuteronomy 29:26. _GODS _- WHOM _HE HAD NOT GIVEN UNTO THEM_] This is an unhappy translation. _Houbigant_ renders the original words ולו חלק להם _velo chalak lahem, et quibuscum nulla eis societas_, "And with whom they had no society;" and falls unmercifully on _Le Clerc_ because he had translated it, _From whom they had received no_ _benefits_. I must differ from both these great men, because I think they differ from the text. חלק _chalak_ signifies a _portion_, _lot, inheritance_, and God is frequently represented in Scripture as the _portion_ or _inheritance_ of his people. Here, therefore, I think the original should be rendered, _And there was no portion to_ _them_, that is, the gods they served could neither supply their wants nor save their souls - _they_ were no portion...
