Jeremiah 33:10

Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast, IN THIS PLACE, WHICH YE SAY ... DESOLATE - ()....

These two verses are connected together, and have been improperly divided, for the sentence is not complete. In the first place we have, _Yet shall be heard, _but what? _the voice of joy, etc., _as we find in the following verse. Jeremiah confirms at large what he had taught respecting the return of the people, because there was need of many and strong supports, that, the faithful might _proceed _in their course with _confidence _It was indeed difficult to muster courage under so great a calamity; and had they for a short season breathing time, yet new trials constantly arising might have cast them down and laid them prostrate. There is no wonder then that the Prophet here speaks diffusely of that favor which was deemed incredible; and then the memory of it might not have always remained fixed in the hearts of the faithful, had not a repeated confirmation been given. 1-13 Those who expect to receive comforts from God, must call upon him. Promises are given, not to do away, but to quicken and encourage prayer. These promises lead us to the gospel of Christ; and in that God has revealed truth to direct us, and peace to make us easy. All who by sanctifying grace are cleansed from the filth of sin, by pardoning mercy are freed from the guilt. When sinners are thus justified, washed, and sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit, they are enabled to walk before God in peace and purity. WHICH YE SAY SHALL BE DESOLATE - Of which ye say, It is desolate ... The prophet first sees Judaea silent and desolate during the 70 years’ captivity: and then describes the two things, men and cattle, without which land is valueless....

EXPOSITION A chapter of promises, having reference, first, to the people and kingdom in general (Jeremiah 33:4), and then to the royal and priestly offices in particular (Jeremiah 33:14). The first part is but the expansion of passages in the preceding prophecy, to which this chapter is attached by the opening verse. The remaining portion is less closely connected; it is occupied by promises of the perpetual duration of the house of David and of the Levites. It should be noticed by the student that there are difficulties connected with the authorship of Jeremiah 33:14, Jeremiah 33:26 (see below)....

THUS SAITH THE LORD, AGAIN THERE SHALL BE HEARD IN THIS PLACE,.... This is to be connected with the beginning of Jeremiah 33:11; and what follows to be put in a parenthesis: WHICH YE SAY [SHALL BE] DESOLATE WITHOUT MAN AND WITHOUT BEAST: as in Jeremiah 32:43; the destruction of it being now certain and inevitable; and by which such desolation would be made throughout the country, that very few men or cattle would be left: [EVEN] IN THE CITIES OF JUDAH, AND IN THE STREETS OF JERUSALEM, THAT ARE DESOLATE; as they were already, the country being in the hands of the enemy, and the city almost depopulated by the sword, famine, and pestilence, and just about to be delivered up: and so without man, and without inhabitant, and

JEREMIAH 33. PROMISES OF RESTORATION. There may be a Jeremianic nucleus in the first half of the chapter, but Jeremiah 33:14, being imitative, and omitted by LXX, is probably late. Yahweh the Restorer promises to reveal great and secret things (Isaiah 48:6). See introd. summary to the section. The genuineness of these _vv_. may be regarded as questionable; although the fact that the overthrow of Jerusalem is a thing of the past and the land is waste does not prove it to be non-Jeremianic, as the prophet survived the final disaster. The form of the doxology (Jeremiah 33:11), we may note, differs distinctly from that of post-exilic times....
