Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. CALL UNTO ME ... I WILL ANSWER - (; ). Jeremiah, as the representative of the people of God, is urged by God to pray for that which God has determined to grant-namely, the restoration. God's promises are not to slacken, but to quicken the prayers of His people (; ; Isaiah 62:6). For the Prophet, no doubt, had earnestly prayed, and his prison must have inflamed his ardor, so as to intercede constantly with God. God then does not here reprove his torpor or his sloth by saying, _Cry to me; _but as I have said, the word is so directed to the Prophet, that God excites all the godly to pray. There is indeed here an implied reproof, as though he had said that it was their fault that God did not cheer their minds with a joyful and happy message, for they had closed the door against themselves, so as to prevent God from offering them that comfort which they yet _especially _wished; but men, while they expect God to be propitious to them, do not yet g...

1-13 Those who expect to receive comforts from God, must call upon him. Promises are given, not to do away, but to quicken and encourage prayer. These promises lead us to the gospel of Christ; and in that God has revealed truth to direct us, and peace to make us easy. All who by sanctifying grace are cleansed from the filth of sin, by pardoning mercy are freed from the guilt. When sinners are thus justified, washed, and sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit, they are enabled to walk before God in peace and purity. Many are led to perceive the real difference between the people of God and the world around them, and to fear the Divine wrath. Verse Jeremiah 33:3. _CALL UNTO ME, AND I WILL ANSWER THEE_] To me alone it belongs to reveal what is future; and the stupendous things which are now coming are known only to myself. These idolaters go to their gods to get information relative to the issue of the present commotions; but there is no light in them. _Ask thou_, O Jeremiah, and I will tell _thee_ the great and mighty things which _even thou_ knowest not....

MIGHTY THINGS - Or, as in the margin. The words are probably a quotation from Isaiah 48:6....

EXPOSITION A chapter of promises, having reference, first, to the people and kingdom in general (Jeremiah 33:4), and then to the royal and priestly offices in particular (Jeremiah 33:14). The first part is but the expansion of passages in the preceding prophecy, to which this chapter is attached by the opening verse. The remaining portion is less closely connected; it is occupied by promises of the perpetual duration of the house of David and of the Levites. It should be noticed by the student that there are difficulties connected with the authorship of Jeremiah 33:14, Jeremiah 33:26 (see below)....
